Full Version: Scholar's Showdown
DemiDec Talk > Competitions and Scores > Scholar's Cup C&S
alpaca
So there are four main events in the World Scholar's Cup, each covering all the subjects:

1. Scholar's Challenge
2. Essay
3. Team Debate
4. Scholar's Bowl

At larger tournaments, there is also a Debate Showcase in which the top debaters from different countries are formed into new teams that debate in public, with supporting arguments from the audience.

Now, at Worlds this year, we're introducing a Scholar's Showdown.

We're currently finalizing the format for the Showdown - which is to be an adversarial event in which teams face off on stage. If you have any ideas for what you think would make this Showdown more exciting, more challenging, or more fun... would love to hear them. Questions we're considering:

1. Should the Showdown be between the teams as they are, or between "shuffled teams" mixing students from different countries (as in the Debate Showcase)
2. Should the questions be multiple choice, or buzz-in style?
3. Should teams get to pose their own questions to one another? (This might turn into a trivia contest, though.)
4. Should teams be seeded by their score in the Bowl?

As of now, the answers are tentatively:

1. As they are
2. Buzz-in
3. No
4. Yes

Looking forward to your feedback and ideas. Remember, neither the Showcase nor the Showdown counts toward overall competition scores. These "exhibition" events take place on Sunday, before the evening awards ceremony.

The audience should be encouraged to cheer...

On a serious note, my high school did something that I think is roughly the same as what you propose: http://www.smsd.org/parents/media/default.asp?catid=12

I personally like that format, as it's much more fun to watch than say, USAD oral relay. But yeah, I'm a big fan of tossup questions, where you can buzz in as soon as you think you know...

Buzzers, absolutely. I LOVE BUZZERS.

I don't like buzzers as much. It adds excitement, but you can be twice as smart as your opponent, but if they're twitchier than you, you're screwed.

But buzzers make for more epic h massachusetts illarity. For example, we had this one question that went "The state drink of florida is orange juice. What is the state drink of?" at which point someone buzzes in, but they just assumed the question was "what is the state drink of florida?". He then proceeded to sheepishly answer "iced tea?" To this day, we still warn people about "iced tea" questions...

I did that before, only I got the answer right, I have no clue how.
Captaink
I've done that before too. It's just that much more epic...

See? Buzzers rule.

Hey Dan, what are you thinking as far as "toss-up" vs. "directed" questions? Tossup is more fun to watch, but also easier for one team to straight dominate the other. Directed is boring, but more egalitarian...

I don't like buzzers because of bad experiences with Quiz Bowl in high school. Answering other teams bonus questions, etc. (Give me a break I was sleep deprived)

You could do it like a spelling bee, only with trivia type stuff instead. Still entertaining for the crowd to watch, but it emphasizes knowledge instead of flat out speed.

So it was buzzers FTW with you guys?
rickshawman
i'm pretty sure this didn't happen, unless i was somewhere random? the scholar's bowl ran too long, so they had to replace this with the junior debate showcase.

Back in a time when I could beat Jeremy at something. God bless my trigger happy fingers.
