QUOTE If this is true, then what an absolute waste of an opportunity to get more attention focused on a program that is still UNKNOWN (except for Cali and certain parts of Tex). I do not need to have my students acting like show dogs for a relay that has no meaning. This whole program has suffered from undernourishment for decades. You get more attention by getting more people (PARENTS) involved in actually WATCHING their children DO something. For all the hours we spend prepping their children, the ONLY time they get to root their kids on, to show that they are behind them is during a meaning -filled SQ relay. This is where we fall apart all the time in failing to get public interest. The equivalent would be having your kid play a sport but they are confined to the locker room to play it, and you can only hear the noises they make in the room. Can't see anything, can't root for anyone, can't say "I'm in the stands supporting you." What a total waste of a potential game changer for the future of the program. There are no PR points (or TV shots)from closed class rooms. SQ is the face of the program, the only face it has. This. QUOTE What is frustrating is to post NEW rules with zero explanation of any changes to scoring. And this. -------------------- "And it seemed as though in a little while the solution would be found, and then a new and splendid life would begin; and it was clear to both of them that they had still a long, long road before them, and that the most complicated and difficult part of it was only just beginning."

What is frustrating is to post NEW rules with zero explanation of any changes to scoring. C'mon Man They may not know how they are going to score it yet. They probably don't. I am assuming that this will be an "exhibition" that does not count toward the final score of an individual or a team. However, if they give an award for it, and they dont make the questions incredibly hard, I think it can be exciting. Decathletes and coaches are competitive people, so I can imagine that all of us will want to win...even if it is not tied to the main event. If they want to make it a little more interesting, they could give scholarship money to the winning team at the state level. What would really make it more interesting (though I know it will never happen) would be to allow the winning team to go to Nationals to compete in the National SQ Relay if that team was not the overall state champion. On the surface, it would appear that the team that wins the state meet would probably win the relay as well, but if all 9 scores count, then balance would matter. A team could not "hide" someone as it can now. Also, teams that are somewhat challenged subjectively would not have to deal with that here. I say give it a chance, as if we have any other choice, and let's see how it goes before condemning it. |

This is just a suggestion, so take it for what it's worth...but why don't we save the panicking and worrying that the sky is falling for when it actually happens? For now, all we know is that they have made changes to Super Quiz...we don't know how it will be scored yet. They know how important Super Quiz is to our teams and to AcaDec itself, I'm sure they'll come up with some way to score it that will make it meaningful and worth doing. Let's just relax, breathe, and be excited that USAD is open to new, fresh ideas and change...maybe some of the wishes we've had for changing the way things are done will finally be listened to!
If it turns out to be terrible, I'd say we can all take our concerns to USAD and hope that they'll listen and fix it. But until then, why don't we just give it a chance? -------------------- Tricia Anderson

Here's an update from USAD. I think that I'm ok with this. It keeps the SQ Relay meaningful, but reduces some of the pressure on the students.
QUOTE Super Quiz™ Relay will be its own event and will count towards the overall team score for the 2012–2013 curriculum year. More details to be announced at a later date. The format of Super Quiz™ will not change. Science and Social Science will both have 50 questions. Online competitions will not include Super Quiz™ only the 7 subjects: Art, Economics, Language/Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science and Social Science. Essay will also be included. Essay topics will consist of Language Literature topics and Science for the 2012–2013 year. If I'm reading this right, the relay scores will not be part of the individual scores, only the team scores. Makes sense. -------------------- "And it seemed as though in a little while the solution would be found, and then a new and splendid life would begin; and it was clear to both of them that they had still a long, long road before them, and that the most complicated and difficult part of it was only just beginning."

That sounds a bit better. I like that it (at least if I'm understanding it correctly) forces you to have nine good decathletes, not just six.
Regardless, I'm interested in seeing how the schools that do not do SQ at Locals and Regionals will react to this change. -------------------- "To the Lost."

I still don't get it. So the total team points will be out of 66,000 now? But the individual can still only get 10,000?

I think what people are saying is that the Super Quiz team score will be separate and not included in the regular team score - so the team score would still be out of 60,000. |

I think it has been confirmed that SQ is worth something. But, I'm not sure how open I am to the idea of having all 9 scores count. Hopefully they only use the top 2 scores in each category for Relay. Consistency would be nice This post has been edited by swaswa: Mar 1 2012, 10:04 PM -------------------- Swaroon Sridhar

a quote from a colleague who got an email from USAD:
"I just got an email back from Mylene at USAD. Super Quiz will be a separate contest and not be included in the Decathlon competition. We will have seven written tests and the three subjectives with no super quiz added for overall team competition." nuff said. The Relay is dead! -------------------- Joseph Eberhard, Ed.D.

It is posted. That's what I quoted above.
