I think there needs to be a certain central group of questions to address, but I can entertain the thought of allowing a team to select from a set of optional lines of research to answer a question. This would make judging more subjective, but since we all get to review the final products we would be able to see if going with philosophy-art-film-literature presented a stronger case than, say, philosophy-art-music-literature. That would allow for more tactical decisions within each team.

Two weeks would be good to start with. We can see if we need more time. That's what the beta period is for.

8.0 Physical Contact

OK, so Jonesy makes six. We could do a beta of this with two teams of three once you guys weigh in on how much time is needed for a question set as I outlined above.

Don't forget:
9.0 Malware, Viruses, Trojan Horses, etc.

Not really all that uncommon, unless your name starts with a "Jones-", "Research Monke-" or a "Widge-".

I'm in, though I'm not into being a captain, and whatever happens, I wouldn't be able to start anything before Jan 8 or so. Should be interesting when I throw this into starting up my music production, 8am Latin courses, and my usual 16 units.
Might I suggest, for maximum time flexibility and the like, that we use Pacific Time as our standard for submission of responses and all that jazz?
Not that I'm being a West Coast homer or anything...

We've got a good level of interest here, and I like that.

I could post end time equivalents in all time zones so nobody has to do fancy time zone math unless he or she is outside of the USA.

As for malware and the like, that's covered in the TOS, so I'm good there.

Once enough people doing this have real jobs and accumulated vacation time, we can talk about having periodic national get-togethers. Neither I nor DDT nor DemiDec can foot expenses, which is why we have to wait until we have moneys.

I'll get a part of the forum set up to do this. It'll need to be separate because for this to work I'll have to be able to mess with lots of security settings and stuff like that. You'll see how cool it is once we get it rolling.

OK EVERYBODY: GO POST HERE

http://demidectalk.com/index.php?showtopic=1135

It's a beta trial, so we need to walk through the process to see where it breaks down or could use some change.

The last one is special... start a thread there and then post it and see if you can get back to it.

Moved the posts from the sign-in thread.

I didn't want to go with a live draft because I didn't want the "I got chosen last" phenomenon. HOWEVER, I could see how it would be fun and could be a possible variant for folks that promise not to let their feelings get hurt when confronted with their chosenlastishness.

For now, I'm still running the beta because if this thing works, we may be seeing a number of people signing on to the board for this.

I'd rather judge than play, if that's possible. I don't think I'll have the time to come up with my own responses, but I'd love to read others...

This is a board for Academic Decathlon. Pretty safe bet that everyone here has been picked last before...

Personally, I'm in favor of the live draft format. I think it would be more fun and probably would produce good teams.
