Hey, there's also Vince Guaraldi! "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" would be marvelous, but so would his more well-known "Linus and Lucy".

That's right, he's the "Charlie Brown music" guy.

What do you think the music will be like? I'm expecting some classic and theater/movie music like most years, but for the other music, I'm think that there will be Beatles, Elvis, and maybe Simon and Garfunkel.

I highly doubt there will be any Beatles. I can't imagine those licensing fees...

"Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago... "

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO <33333333

Still not over the 2013 Russia curriculum. Я люблю Россию.

Considering how USAD likes to recycle, that one would not be a surprise to me, at all.

Some others from the list of possibly affordable licenses...

"Telstar" ... "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy"... "Please Mr. Postman"... "Leader of the Pack"... "It's My Party"... and... "LOUIE LOUIE"!!! <-- if that is on the CD, the Varsities will NEVER stop singing it! Beware!

Just remember, though... USAD can make U sad...

How could the "Music of the 60s" go horribly, horribly wrong? Consider the following playlist:

https://flashbak.com/listen-to-13-of-the-ab...the-1960s-5495/

Some of the lowest of the low-lights...

"Paralyzed" by The Legendary Stardust Cowboy... not relevant, you say? Dude, David Bowie was his biggest fan! Also, little to no royalties required to secure rights for this bad boy, and I do mean bad.

“Umbassa and the Dragon” by The Turtles... an example of experimental music. As in John Cage experimental. Also, probably available for very little royalties.

“Surfin’ School” by King Uszniewicz & The Usniewicztones... because Surfer Music is so very 60s. Just be glad they didn't take this band's cover of "Little Dead Surfer Girl."

“The Face from Outer Space” by Jeff Barry... this from a guy that wrote some amazing stuff in his career... but this? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...

“Who Are Parents?” by The Shaggs... apparently, this band was formed long before Austin Powers was a thing. Or before harmony was a thing. I think the owners of this tune would pay USAD to include this.

Then there's... https://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures...ixties-20111116

Tiny Tim - "Tiptoe Through the Tulips"... oh yeah, this one... And lucky you, it was in the 60s and even noticeably popular during that time period. Put it on the CD. Maybe the guy that owns the royalties won't admit to it and we can play it for free...

"I Got You Babe" - Sonny and Cher... Three chords? How about only TWO! There's a reason this song is the soundtrack to kick off a new day in hell in Ground Hog Day.

"Sugar, Sugar" - The Archies... most popular song of 1969 and will make you pray for shrapnel from an MC5 concert to put you out of your misery.

"I'm Henry the 8th I Am" - Herman's Hermits... Just remember, these guys were so huge that The Who opened up for them when they toured the USA. So here's one of their worst to remember them by.

"Yummy Yummy Yummy" - The Ohio Express... hey, we got "Sugar, Sugar" on there, so why not this one, too?

So, yeah, don't rave until you see the list of tracks on the CD...

My 'this' was to agree with sentiment that I will never accept 'get used to it' as a solution. It may be frustrating and seem impossible, but I will always push for improvement and positive change. I think a much better slogan is 'be philosophical about it, but strive for change'.

Also, I'm quite familiar with scoring fiascos, having been stripped of a Division II National Championship by what USAD referred to as a 'scoring issue'.

True, there was that awful gash...

OK, I'll agree in principle to the slogan, but it is too lengthy.

I'll borrow a page from The Big Lebowski... "The coach abides". To abide is to yield without breaking. True, this aggression will not stand, man but nevertheless, the coach abides.

Essay has been a problem child for, what, 32 years now? I really don't see a solution for judging inconsistencies that wouldn't introduce different ways inconsistencies would emerge - or that wouldn't introduce complexities that we'd have to test out to see if they would scale out over a large competition.

Grammar, for example. Is there way to draw up a rubric for it that considers both the length of the response as well as the accuracy of the grammar? Do we say that each response must include a minimum of 25 sentences to receive full points for grammar, with 4% of the points for grammar deducted per sentence below 25 submitted? OK, that is a start... now, if there is an essay with 30 sentences, of which 6 are grammatically incorrect and another essay is submitted with 40 sentences, of which 8 are grammatically incorrect, do they score the same? Or does the paper with 8 total errors fare worse than the one with 6, even though percentage wise they have the same rate of errors? Are some errors worse than others? IE, is an incomplete sentence worse than using a colon where a semi-colon is called for? Can we see a points breakdown of how the errors relate to each other?

And even if all this was hammered out, then we have coaches filing appeals because a punctuation mark looks to them to be a period, even though the judge said it was a comma.

And then we get used to it again, even after we thought it was fixed.

Then we have the content portion... how are rubrics drawn up for it so that we can tell the students what MUST be in each essay? If coaches have rubrics, would they be able to grade their own team's essays to see how they stack up with their scores? Back to helping out the students, when I taught AP, I could tell kids how to both write and grade a FRQ. I never had that ability with an AcDec essay. But to do that, there would have to be a question writing committee that could prepare the questions well in advance of the curriculum release.

I heard someone complaining about essay scores...

Eberhard is right. Get used to it.

And Greg (and others) is right. Have the tiers determined not by S/M/L but by score. We will complain about that, as well, but we won't complain about the top schools having different subjective results... unless the schools are judged by different teams, which has happened before, mostly because there are just so many schools to judge. Logistically, you can't get through all the subjectives in time for scores to be delivered unless you have teams of judges working in parallel with each other.

There will be Santa Claus rooms with 1000s for everyone and Scrooge rooms where scores go to get... Scrooged... This is why the appeal can only be accepted if it is on a question of mathematics. If there's a problem with the judging arrangements, that's a note for the coaches' meeting for planning the next year.

I could go on, but it all circles back to what Eberhard said. Get used to it.

I *always* hated essay scores, for the record. Not just mine, but I've hated other schools' essay scores, as well.

^ I've got several blogs that pipe content into that part of my forum. I go to the blog plugin, enter the URL of the blog's RSS feed, add a title for the blog, hit save, and the entries roll in.

Although, I look for an IPB app that does what I'm talking about and it looks like it'll cost $30. Dang, SMF stuff be for free...

Next year's topic will be...

ACADEMIC DECATHLON

That's right! The competition *is* the topic! The packets will focus, thusly:

ECONOMICS: Special focus on printing costs and getting budget for competitions.

MUSIC: "The Songs of Decathlon", featuring the worst songs of each year that the decathletes have loved to hate. There will also be a special John Cage-inspired composition, "ABCDE", which will be a piano played by a Varsity guessing answers to the objective tests from 2008. Lots of C in that one, but there will be enough variety to keep it random.

ART: Emphasis on photography, particularly group photography. Works studied will be a survey of Academic Decathlon team photos from 1984 to the present. Both standard as well as "wacky" photos will be included.

LANG and LIT: The novel will be "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," which is pretty much guaranteed to be something everyone has read, but we're sure there's at least one varsity per team that hasn't read it and, in fact, will not read it. Or even see the movie. Because varsities.

MATH: Same old math, nothing more to see here, move along. Well, there will be a look at using probability in making multiple-choice exams and the distribution of "C" as a correct answer through the history of the multiple-choice test.

SCIENCE: Aerodynamics. As in paper airplanes and "other creative missiles". Independent study will involve finding out about some of the more legendary AcDec airborne antics.

SOCIAL SCIENCE: Academic Decathlon. That's right, the whole competition, from then until now. Know the teams, know the scores, know the coaches, know the topics. Read this packet, and you'll be ready to kick back with the coaches and complain about the terrible subjective judging back in 2007.

ESSAY: In a twist, Decathletes will be presented with essays from past competitors and have to grade *them*. Let's see how accurately they can score 10 essays, ranging in quality from an Honors magnum opus all the way down to the semi-literate ramblings of a Varsity apologizing why he didn't read anything at all this year but please don't tell his coach, he doesn't want to make her mad. Until after she sees the scores...

You might be able to set up a plugin that will pipe your blog into the IP.Board. I've got a blog-board plugin at my SMF forum that's pretty easy to work with.

Hello everyone! I am a senior decathlete from Nebraska. This is my second year in academic decathlon- last year I was in the scholastic division but this year I am in honors. We just had regionals on Saturday, and I am very excited for state next month!

Welcome aboard! Hope your coach didn't get too much grey hair when your GPA went up!

The topic will be...

THE FORGOTTEN PRESIDENCY: The US Executive Branch 1876-1898

It'll be just questions on who the presidents and vice-presidents were during that time. No packet, all independent study. Consequently, it will have the lowest Social Science scores in YEARS.

"Sorry, coach, I just totally blanked on all of them and just guessed B. I have no idea who was president in 1891."

No. This is the year of Delaware and Podiatry. I feel it and I'm going to look up the odds for it on offshore betting sites.

Hmmm...

No wagering on USAD topics, but I did drop a fiver on Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of The Philippines becoming the next pope after Francis I.

Also noticed same shop was giving same odds for Bono and Father Dougal Maguire, 500-1... I lol'd...
