CDO and 10 other teams from AZ, as well as Highland Park and Rockwall from TX, and El Camino Real from CA, will be taking the AZ version of the Round 1 tests on December 3. The Mesa schools (Mesa Mountain View, Westwood, Red Mountain, etc) will take them the following week.

Looking forward to this! tongue.gif

Thanks for sharing!! Wow, Lubbock & Monterey both just keep getting better each year. popcorn.gif

It did not. Did she not graduate? Also, in case you didn't know, you can see the Round 1 leaderboard on ADSIC here!

Okay, so the top teams in Texas right now are:

1. Highland Park 35.0
2. Dulles 32.6
3. James E. Taylor 32.6
4. Little Elm 30.6
5. Pearland 30.0
6. Rockwall-Heath 30.0
7. Dobie 29.9
8. Lubbock 29.4
9. Clear Lake 29.4
10. Klein 29.2
11. Rockwall 29.1
12. Monterey 28.6
13. Friendswood 28.4
14. Nimitz 28.0
15. Seven Lakes 27.6

I really think that Highland Park this year could be the best Texas team we've seen in a long, long time. Don't quote me on that, as we'll have to see how the rest of the year plays out, but holy smurf do they have potential. Maybe this is the team that will finally break California's streak? I mean, I know we've been saying that every three years since 2008, but... maybe this time...?? *wistful look into the distance*

One thing I want to say is that I definitely think that scores are lower than last year, not because of the caliber of the teams but because of a lack of (that level of) inflation. As such, not only do I think, say, Dulles has a better team than last year despite having a lower R1 score, but HP is way better than last year, where they scored "only" 34k at R1. At first it's kind of a shock to adjust oneself to these numbers after having gotten used to the 49 9k'ers last year, but these are much more like usual compared to what we've seen in 2015 and 2016. It's also worth noting that California's R1 version seems like it was "easier", as even the ECR kids said (they scored lower on the Texas version a month after their own version), so be particularly careful when comparing teams across states.

That aside though -- it's looking like a really close match between Dulles and James E. Taylor still (why isn't calling them JET a thing?). Both have been essentially neck-and-neck since USAD Easy, and both have actually gone up since then -- not an easy task -- and whatever the case we've got two very impressive teams here. But, even though I don't have Taylor's individual scores, I'm willing to bet that their killer Honors are essentially pretty maxed out, meaning that it'll likely be harder for them to grow from this point onward. Whatever the case, Large State will be tons of fun to watch. (As an aside: will they hit 50k this year? How many 50k teams will Texas have this year? Surely fewer than last year's six, right?)

Also, Little Elm -- WOW. Making me proud. :') They showed themselves to be quite the growers last year, and already they've improved themselves from USAD Easy to Round 1 (again, not an easy task). I think they'll snatch second in Medium pretty easily. But will they end up competition for Dulles and Taylor? I think it's certainly very plausible for them to work their way up to that level as the season goes on, and I'm very excited to see what they're capable of.

Some teams that seem to be as good as or better than last year: Dobie, who put up a strong showing with an incredible Varsity bracket; Lubbock and Monterey, who both seem to be getting better each year; Clear Lake, who had a relatively weak last year by their standards but who seem to be back at it now; Klein, who put up an out-of-the-blue great team last year and who look to be doing about as well this year; Nimitz, who, well, is Nimitz; John Marshall, who had a surprise 42k run last year and who seem to be about as good this year; Garland, who didn't make it to State last year but who may have a good chance this year; Ridge Point, fresh off their best year yet and who improved upon their district score from last year; Clear Creek, whom, well, I don't know much about other than that they seem to be about as good as last year; Talkington, who, having been beaten by their rival Estacado last year seem to be coming back somewhat stronger; Bandera, who had a pretty fantastic year last year and who seemed poised to do it again; Brandeis, who don't seem poised to make State but who seem to be improving a fair amount from 2016; and Earl Warren, who narrowly missed State last year but who will hopefully be back again this year!

Some teams who seem to be having a down year: Pearland, who has a three-year 50k streak that may be in danger; Rockwall-Heath, fresh off hitting 50k for the first time ever; Rockwall, for whom improving upon last year would be pretty smurfing hard anyway; Friendswood, who seem to wax and wane over the years, meaning we should likely be very scared for next year; Seven Lakes, who was neck-and-neck with Taylor for most of last year and who seemed to be doing fairly well before taking a hit at R1; Barbers Hill, who has become a Medium Schools staple over the past years; Alvin, who had a very good year last year but who seem to be a bit lower this year; King, who is moving to Medium and who may not hit 40k this year for the first time in a while; Morton Ranch, reeling from the loss of superstar Scholastic Overdog himself; Lubbock Coronado, who keeps coming back for randomly very good years like last year; Turner, who had a really great showing at State last year but who may not be able to repeat it; and Alice, whose legendary 50k performance last year seems to have been their swan song now that Eberhard's gone. sad.gif

I'm very curious about some of the teams we haven't heard from yet. How will Coppell do after 2015's and 2016's smash successes? How are the Planos holding up? Frisco? We haven't heard a peep out of Wakeland since their 49k Friscan record last year, and I really wanna know what they're up to. (They had their R1 today, but I've yet to hear anything about how it went. All I know is that it will be a very, very down year for Liberty.) Pearce has been pretty good as of late, and so has Keller, so I'm wondering about those. Clements? JPII/Taylor Taylor? Many questions! Much excitement! Good luck everyone in the upcoming preparation season! biggrin.gif

Anna Chang was not at competition, and might take this year off, but might not. There are more important things than ACADEC, as hard as that may be to consider; we'll just have to wait and see. Two years ago I had the pleasure of judging her speech at a competition when she had the unfortunate task of going 1st in the room. I had never seen or heard her before, and she was terrific--I knew right then without seeing anyone else that she would likely have the best speech in the room, and I was correct. It could very well be that she needs to take some time off . . . or not.

Is the Flower Mound meet the scores we are missing?

We are taking three varsities and six scholastics. Our scholastic depth is some of the best I think any team has had ever- now we are banking on it (six in the top 21 of nationally known scores). The fight between us and Taylor (never say die for those teams a bit behind though) will come down to varsities. We will win scholastics, they will win honors- it will come down to subjectives and varsities. Hopefully we can catch HP in the meantime. If not, I'm okay with losing to the best Texas team I have seen in my ten years doing this. Regionals will be quite intense in west Houston.

They took USAD Medium at Flower Mound. Scores can be found here. (Unless there was a second Flower Mound-hosted competition??)

Seriously though, I don't think I've ever seen such a crazy amount of Scholastic firepower before. I'm pretty sure this has gotta be the first time in history that a team was played with six Scholastics, no??

Round 1 in Nebraska is two scrimmages with 3 subjects at each. We did art, lit, and math in November. Today was supposed to be econ, music, and science. Cancelled because of the weather, and no way to make it up before regionals. So we just don't get to see those round 1 tests, I don't get to use those scores for determining my team, my kids miss out on the opportunity to compete, and I am angry.

:/

Weather sucks sometimes. I hope in the future they learn to schedule this scrimmage earlier so that it is possible to make up before Regionals. (And so it's less likely to get snowed out too, of course.) It may be possible for them to release the tests to your campus administrators, one of whom could theoretically proctor them. I would be so disappointed as a Decathlete if I lost out on being able to do a competition for this reason.

Fingers crossed that none of Massachusetts's competitions get snowed out this year...

Disappointing! I am sorry to hear that. sad.gif The exact same thing happened to us in Nebraska in December 2007.
