"The criteria for selection will be that the team participating in Division IV will be from a different division than the state championship team unless there are no divisions in that state."

This makes it sound like the cutoff is based on the state organization's divisions, not USAD divisions.

Score-based divisions are and always will be a horrible idea. They should be based on school size. If you are concerned about private schools stacking D3, make a rule that any school with an admissions standard is in D1.

Alaska state awards banquet is tonight. I have most unfortunately learned that my former team, West Valley, has only one varsity and is therefore not in contention to win, although they should still get plenty of individual medals. They had a coaching change this year and I think recruitment suffered. Lathrop and IDEA are the front runners. It has been fun to meet some talented kids this week helping out with speech, interview, and SQ.

Essay judging is hard. I did it for both state and nationals and certainly tried to stick to the rubric as well as go back and check previous scores to make sure I was being consistent, which I think are the two most important things judges can do. Still, some judges interpret the rubric differently from others, and sometimes we are crunched for time, so it is far from perfect. Ideally I think the training process would be a lot more rigorous, with many examples of old essays and what scores they "should" receive, and there would also be more judges per essay to help cancel out weird scores.

All of that said, as a competitor 8-10 years ago, I did not generally feel that essay scoring was unfair. I worked up to consistently good scores by knowing the material and honing writing skills, and the essays I felt were worse while writing them were the ones that received lower scores. Maybe it's changed, maybe not.

This is one of the few USAD unilateral changes that I am inclined to support. We will have to see how it goes.

Do they do the interview and speech based on D1-D2-D3 at Nationals?

Having only students from one division at each table, you mean? No, I don't think so.

Landing in Anchorage in 25 minutes. We are renting a house neari Northwoods and 88th.

A fine location, and cheaper than the Hilton I imagine. Hope you'll still be hanging around! Nothing quite like the atmosphere with all the teams there together, as you know.

It's been 8 years since I was last at USAD Nationals. Now I'm excited to welcome some of you whom I only know online to Alaska.

Post what dates you'll be in town, what activities you've planned or want to do, etc. I expect we'll be seeing each other around the Hilton and Egan Center, but it would be fun to make sure there's some sort of ADT meetup. No promises on getting anywhere outside of downtown, but it's possible.

See you soon, I hope!

(Also is anyone else not looking forward to the 8 AM awards banquet? Dinner time is so much better.)

You can be assured Alaska has a very good program for training speech and interview judges. The judging may be harsh overall, but it will be consistent.

It's crazy to suggest the minimum essay score should be a 700. What's the point of having it be worth 1,000 points at all then?

Give judges more examples, have more judges per essay, etc. Personally I felt that all of the essays I wrote were judged fairly (the best ones got the highest scores). Who knows if that's changed since 2008.

Whoaaaa, I hadn't even noticed either of those data points. That's definitely super interesting. I don't know if either of those things have ever happened before.

I trust the scoremongers to scour the data and find out. wink.gif

Late to the party. Highland Park won without a single individual in the top 3 by division? Has that ever happened before?

Also, they got as many medals as Coppell and Rockwall combined, despite only winning by 200 points. Weird results.

Someone just posted a bunch of photos from the 2005 state competition (my freshman year). They include Tony Knowles and Susan Butcher giving speeches and presenting medals. Last year, they had me hanging medals.

Despite the steep decline in the stature of Alaska AD medal presenters, I expect to see some talented kids. State 2016 this coming weekend.

The "records" are meaningless. The tests are clearly way easier than years past. Sorry to rain on anyone's parade.
