Fall starts earlier for teachers, I'm still thinking this is summer... smile.gif

I start my new job at ForeScout Technologies as a Solutions Architect tomorrow. Going to Austria for a week, leaving 30 August - still summer for me. emot-smug.gif

Question: is the situation with Music this year better than, as bad as, or worse than trying to tell the difference between Western tuning and Asian tuning? (China, 2006-2007)

And, yes, FUN! Who do you think is responsible for all the smileys here, anyway?

Sometimes, you just have to take a job somewhere else with better conditions for more pay. emot-smug.gif

Actually, I'm really stoked. I'll be working for a network security vendor starting on the 17th. I've got a passion for this technology and it'll be great to get into the middle of it and learn all about it.

Thank you AcDec, for getting me in the habit of reading tons of stuff and turning me into a life-long learner.

I don't watch the Game of Thrones, but I've always felt that The Fellowship of the Ring was an AcDec team. Moria was regionals and just south of Lothlorien was state, but they didn't qualify for nationals, so they went their way. Most of them got back together for a reunion, though.

Honors
Legolas (most elves are Honors)
Aragorn
Gandalf (could also be mistaken for their coach...)

Scholastic
Boromir
Gimli
Sam (He's actually a varsity, playing up as a Scholastic)

Varsity
Merry
Pippin (Who else would ride trees but varsities?)
Frodo (Who else would be captured by a spider and have his finger bitten off but a varsity?)

Thanks for merging this thread for me (hadn't seen it earlier). Does the movie ever say how Peter Parker's school does at Nationals? It's probably one of New York's top teams in USAD history! (nothing against New York, but they must not have a lot of schools that compete in AcDec there and it looks like they haven't finished in the top ten at Nationals in 20+ years?)

NYC doesn't have teams. As I recall, NY's entry was an upstate school.

I'd find it more believable if it was a CA team. Spiderman has more of a West Coast attitude, anyway.

Gotta face facts, though... grades are becoming strange things and the GPA ideas of several decades ago are being affected by some fundamental changes in education, where the average kid is now above average...

ACDEC COACH: Why are you trying to kill my program?
OVERLY GENEROUS ENGLISH TEACHER: What do you mean?
ACDEC COACH: You gave one of my Varsities an *A*!!!
ocmhmm.jpg

On the serious side, I had an idea... allow honors and scholastics to compete at a lower GPA level, with the following caveat: all scores are discounted.

An honors competing as a scholastic has a 10% overall score reduction. Honors as Varsity has a 20% score reduction. Scholastic as Varsity has a 10% reduction.

This way, you can have nine honors students compete, but they are at a handicap relative to "pure" students from other schools. On the other hand, if you have nothing but go-getters at your campus, you can have a team of 100% go-getters.

Rather than spout out what I think should or should not count, I'd recommend checking with your regional or state AD for a ruling. There's a chance that the class counts as an academic class, but it could also be considered a subjective course, such as Art or Music, which does not count.

For student 2, I submit exhibit A...

http://www.cfisd.net/files/1413/9532/7228/hscourse.pdf

PACE is a class for 9th graders to help them transition from middle school to high school that's a local credit only, so maybe it might not count... check with your local or state AD board for a ruling, I'm guessing. Fnd Pers Fit is definitely gym, no need to ask about that.

The Medium/Small meet being in Frisco, though... as a Friscan, I find this really saddening. Making the road trip down to State with everyone in the little vans and staying in a hotel and checking out the Riverwalk was always the tradition. State was so much fun. And now we're going to be literally across the street from one of the Frisco ISD campuses. Probably not even going to get a hotel at all. Takes a lot of the fun out of it. :/ I wonder if we'll see a resulting drop in FISD's State performances.

Book a hotel or campsite or SOMETHING, but definitely keep the kids together during competition. It really REALLY helps.

I hated when state was at Plano ISD one year. We really missed out on the camaraderie.

Ghana coffins are awesome. Get your varsities started on the team coffin now! smile.gif

Music is AWESOME, and I flipped to see Umm Kalthoum on the list! She's AMAZING. Also, her compositions are usually 30-50 minutes long, with massive introductions, so it's most likely only an excerpt.

For more modern African music, you really owe it to your teams to do some enrichment - get Angelique Kidjo, Amadou et Mariam, some High Life horns from Ghana, and Bisso na Bisso. Especially Bisso na Bisso. That is some 100% fun Congolese rap, right there.

Stanley Tree, you want to get the whole Racines album. Everyone else, listen to at least their song "Bisso na Bisso" which means 'everyone, together.' Trust me, if I was coaching, I'd have everybody at the competition chanting that chorus about 20 minutes before the awards assembly starts because it's that much fun.

For the history, I recommend "Lumumba", a historical drama about the rise and fall of Congo's first president. It's in French with subtitles and no name for the character of the CIA station chief in Congo because of Frank Carlucci's lawsuit against the film's implication that he acquiesced to the murder of Lumumba. For slavery, "Cobra Verde" is a chilling tale about the cruelty of the traffic, told in a very "Heart of Darkness" way, except it's more from Kurtz' point of view.

Both Top Gear Africa specials are great fun. Zimbabwe and Uganda, epic drives.

Mitt Romney had binders full of women.

Just sayin'.

The missus and I are going to also consider a list of all the places we'd like to see and then prioritizing them. Life is long, but not forever, so we'd like to make sure we don't wind up haunting the world because of some revenant-inducing compulsion to linger here and see just a bit more. smile.gif

QUOTE (Villager from the Far East @ Apr 26 2017, 08:20 PM) *
Dear all,

Thank you for your understanding and replies. I will definitely continue committing to USAD to promote its spirit to more students. And you guys are absolutely right- camaraderie and hard work trump trophies and banners. Being perpetually trapped in this state of anger and sadness will not help much in ameliorating this competition, therefore I will attempt to tackle this problem with a positive outlook, with reason and justice on my side.

Regarding your question, TimDefacto, I assure you that (at least in the case of our school) the scholastic bracket standards were strictly enforced in terms of GPA (Honors with 3.75-4.00, Scholastic with 3.00-3.74, Varsity 0.00-2.99). Last year we employed the ranking system to determine one's scholastic division (I forgot the exact boundary but it was quite cut-throat, ~top 50 for Honors; top 150 for Scholastic, and the rest for Varsity? Our school rarely have students below 3.0 GPA). The official exam that you mentioned was employed this year at other schools across China. I do agree that the scoring system was unfair because an honors student might have intentionally performed poorly to get classified as a Varsity, etc.

Hello Villager and welcome to the board.

11 years ago, I wrote this about Academic Decathlon: http://demidectalk.com/index.php?showtopic=74

I know the date says 2009, but we had a forum crash and this was a topic that we made sure survived that crash.

Scoring and awards issues have been problems before, and they will be problems again. Back in 1986, I had the highest Scholastic score in the state of Texas, but because Superquiz wasn't included in personal totals that year, I wound up being the third-highest score, officially. Scoring issues will always be a thorn in the side of AcDec.

But there is a reason why, even four years after my last round as a coach, I'm still participating in an AcDec forum.

This summer, I shall convey the missus to Austria, whereat we shall celebrate the 30th anniversary of us two getting hitched.

Found some really nice vacation package rates on Hotwire for between 1000-1400 per person to Vienna at the start of September. I may not get the 80-day weekend from May-August, but I *can* now travel in the off-season. Life be good, and Vienna, here we come!

Maybe those are the scores a team gets when it's populated purely with imaginary boyfriends and girlfriends.

"Oh yeah, I have an AcaDec score... it's 46000, pretty sweet... it's in Canada, I'll see that score this summer... I write to it all the time, it's for real!"

Might also want to translate that into Mandarin, Canadian English, and UK English to get a measure of interest from the other teams. emot-smug.gif
