Episode 4 is up! Sam Keal and I talk about our Nationals predictions. smile.gif We somehow talked for two hours, so caveat auditor!

Also: For those of you who will be competing this week, DO NOT LISTEN YET!! You have better things to do with your time. Go study. tongue.gif <3

The best part of this episode is that it will now be permanently on the record that Sebastian thought that March Madness was football. And maybe baseball.

Do people put memes on Instagram??

Yes. Yes it does.

And there was a winner. Wilmot Union has captured their 5th consecutive state championship! It was a lot closer than I expected. Watertown was just about 500 points behind Wilmot.

1.) Wilmot Union
2.) Watertown
3.) Pewaukee
4.) NBE
5.) WW
6.) RKI (about 50 behind WW)

Predictions for Wisconsin State Competition on March 8-9. Lots of things could happen. Lots of things will happen, and there’s a .05% chance that nothing will happen, but here’s my best guess at what will happen. This version will be without SuperQuiz scores. I might try a version with SuperQuiz scores, but those are really hard to predict.

Overall Team Scores
1. Wilmot Union – State Champ to Nationals – 45,438.1
2. Watertown – Medium School Online Nats – Division I Champs – 43,020.9
3. Pewaukee – Division II Champs – 41,740.3
4. New Berlin Eisenhower – 39,302.7
5. Rufus King International – Division IV to Nationals – 39,279.9
6. New Richmond – 38,739.2
7. Sun Prairie – Large School Online Nats – 38,576.7
8. Slinger – 38,479.7
9. Waukesha West – 38,424.7
10. New Berlin West – Division III Champs – 36,825.4
11. Green Bay Preble – 35,976.6
12. Melrose-Mindoro – Small School Online Nats – Division IV Champs – 35,857
13. Marathon – 35,114.7
14. Green Bay East – 34,261.2
15. Green Bay Southwest – 33,526.0
16. Winneconne – 31,263.2
17. Seymour – 31,023.6
18. Dodgeland – 30,704.1
19. Durand – 30,678.6
20. Ladysmith – 29,784.8

Wilmot will dominate. 46k could be a possibility, but an increase to the mid-45k range is typical for their regional to state improvements.

Even though Pewaukee had a couple hundred on Watertown at Regionals, subjective scores from the Whitewater regional were low, and I think Watertown will have a significant increase in objective scores at state; however, Pewaukee is known for their impressive regional to state improvements, so this could be very close.

New Berlin Eisenhower and Rufus King will also be very close, but with NBE’s history of improving a lot in objectives, I think they’ll take the 4th place spot by less than 100 points. NBE had the highest subjective scores in the state at Regionals, so they might drop a little in those, bringing them very close to RKI (Wisconsin has some great abbreviations). RKI will also be the Division IV representative to nationals. If Wilmot Wins, the only schools in contention for that spot would be Rufus King, Sun Prairie, Melrose-Mindoro, Marathon, Dodgeland, and Ladysmith.

The next four teams (New Richmond, Sun Prairie, Slinger, and Waukesha West) will be very close in the 6th-9th place spots, and any permutation of these schools in these places is equally likely. I think NR has a slight advantage due to subjectives. SP had the 5th highest objective scores in the state at Regionals but had the lowest subjective scores in the state-advancing teams, so hopefully they improve in subs enough to jump to 7th, a great performance for their 20th consecutive state appearance. I know I predicted WW in 7th for last year, and they ended up in 3rd, but I think this will be the year they drop from the top 3 for the first time since 1997.

I have NBW in 10th with a high 36k, but they could easily jump up into the mid-38k range. With this being their second year at state since 2000, we don’t have much historical data on them, but they pulled off an incredible improvement last year, so anything is possible with this team. Green Bay Preble will take 11th.

The race for the Division IV title and the Small School ENats slot has been very close all season, with Mel-Min being about 600 ahead of Marathon at regionals. I think they will keep that lead.

Individual Predictions
Honors
1. Claire Vozel – Wilmot Union
2. Marcus Wolff – Wilmot Union
3. Levi Keen – Wilmot Union
Scholastic
1. Jacob Huebner – Rufus King International
2. Emily Willis – Pewaukee
3. Davis Lohr – Sun Prairie
Varsity
1. Emily Heckel – Wilmot Union
2. Tanis Rossow – Wilmot Union
3. Andre Quarino – Rufus King International

Call me crazy, but I think that Wilmot’s honors squad can pull off a sweep of the top honors spots. At regionals, none of them were in the top 3, and nothing motivates Wilmot like being behind. It will be very close. They will all be around 8.7k, and Eric Komas, Madlyn Singler, and Michela Suski will all be very close in the 8.5-8.7k range. Naveen Albert will also break 8k.
Jacob Huebner will take back the top scholastic spot after falling behind Emily Willis at Regionals. Davis will avenge his defeat at the Whitewater regional to take 3rd place and be the first Sun Prairie decathlete to place in the top three in their division since Jenny Anderson in 2009.
In the Wilmot tradition of improving a lot between each round, Emily Heckel will retain her spot on-top of the varsity pack and Tanis Rossow will jump to be the 2nd place varsity in the state. Andre Quarino will improve in subs from Regionals to take the third-place spot.

Additional Predictions
• Leigh Mills and John Stofflet take a selfie with the audience at Super Quiz
• At least 3 of Watertown’s cheering squad will be shirtless with blue body paint on
• The Sun Prairie alumni going to watch Super Quiz will only listen to Old Man River on the drive up

(Sorry about the two letter abbreviation thing. Sebastian started it, so I figured I might as well keep it going. I regret it.)

Wisconsin State is just one week away. Scores will be had. Tests will be taken. Not necessarily in that order. I'll be posting my predictions probably at the last minute because of midterms and the extremely hot weather we are having here. I don't know when I'll have results, as I'll only be able to attend SuperQuiz this year and won't be at the banquet.

Regional scores can be found here.

Top teams
1. Dulles – above 50k
2. Lubbock – above 50k

All Wisconsin team scores can be found here.

Overall, there were 3 teams over 40k, 13 over 35k, and 26 over 30k. Wilmot Union has a 2.5k lead over Pewaukee, with Watertown just behind Pewaukee. We don't have much individual information yet, but will hopefully have more later.

If I had to guess, Wilmot wins with 43.4

Close. According to the ADSIC twitter, Wilmot won the Whitewater regional (and probably the whole state, but we can't know for sure yet) with 43,088.0.

Sun Prairie got third (Watertown second) with 36346.5. (23648.5 objs). 6 teams over 30k just at Whitewater. We might be looking at 25+ teams with over 30k. Getting to state is going to be very tricky.

The only prediction I feel comfortable making for the Wisconsin regionals is that the outside temperature on your test date will be lower than the team score of all state qualifiers. I'll predict a high temperature on Jan. 12th of 25 degrees and no advancing team to your state meet with a team score of less than 28K! Hopefully, for your benefit, everything will be higher than that!

High of 19 degrees tomorrow. At least no ice storm like 2014. And 2015. And 2016.

My predictions!

Overall Team Scores
1. Wilmot Union – 43k (2)
2. Rufus King International – 40.7k (1)
3. Pewaukee – 40.5 k (2)
4. Watertown – 40k (1)
5. New Berlin West – 39k (3)
6. Waukesha West – 37.5k (1)
7. New Richmond – 36.5k (2)
8. Sun Prairie – 36k (1)
9. Melrose-Mindoro – 35.9k (4)
10. New Berlin Eisenhower – 35.8k (2)
11. Marathon – 35.6k (4)
12. Slinger – 35.5k (2)
13. Green Bay East – 34 k (1)
14. Bay Port – 33.8 k (1)
15. Durand – 33.7 k (3)
16. Green Bay Preble – 33.7 k (1)
17. Green Bay Southwest – 33.6 k (1)
18. Elk Mound – 31.2 k (3)
19. Sparta – 30.1 k (2)
20. Northland Pines – 30k (3)
I really hope it turns out like this, since this would be the first time in recorded history that the top 20 teams in Wisconsin at Regionals broke 30k! And 12 35k teams at Regionals would be another record.

Predictions for each region.

Barron County
1. New Richmond – 36.5 k
2. Durand – 33.7 k
3. Elk Mound – 31.2 k
4. Menomonie
5. Grantsburg
6. Ladysmith
7. Barron
8. Stanley-Boyd
9. Altoona
10. Flambeau
Additional prediction: New Richmond has highest subs in the state.

Green Bay
1. Green Bay East – 34 k
2. Bay Port – 33.8 k
3. Green Bay Preble – 33.7 k
4. Green Bay Southwest – 33.6 k
5. Winneconne
6. Seymour
7. Freedom
8. Beaver Dam
9. Green Bay West
10. De Pere
This one will be very close between the top 4. Very, very close.

Stevens Point
1. Melrose-Mindoro – 35.9
2. Marathon – 35.6
3. Sparta – 30.1 k
4. Northland Pines – 30 k
5. La Crosse Logan
6. Tomah
7. Hillsboro
8. Bangor
9. Mauston
10. Athens

Waukesha
1. Rufus King International – 40.7 k
2. Pewaukee – 40.5 k
3. New Berlin West – 39 k
4. Waukesha West – 37.5 k
5. New Berlin Eisenhower – 35.8 k
6. Slinger – 35.5 k
7. Waukesha North
8. Franklin
9. Washington Park
10. Brown Deer
Top Scorer: Jacob Huebner (also top in the state) with 8,820. This one will be very close between Rufus King and Pewaukee, but I’m guessing Rufus King will have a slight advantage (between 150 and 200) over Pewaukee.

Whitewater
1. Wilmot Union – 43 k
2. Watertown – 40 k
3. Sun Prairie – 36 k
4. Burlington
5. Mt. Horeb
6. Dodgeland
7. Deerfield
8. Cambridge
9. Iowa-Grant
10. Westosha Central
Even though Wilmot’s honors will improve a lot, Michela Suski (Watertown) will have the top honors score (somewhere around 8,500 – 8,800). Davis Lohr (Sun Prairie) will have the top scholastic score (somewhere around 7,200 – 7,500). Tanis Rossow will have the highest varsity score (somewhere around 6,800 – 7,100). If this happens, this will be second year in a row where the top scorers in each category came from three different schools!

Predictions for State Advancement

In Wisconsin, the regional champions advance to state, along with the next three highest scoring teams from each division, and then the next three highest scoring teams from any division.

Barron County – New Richmond (2)
Green Bay – Green Bay East (1)
Stevens Point – Melrose-Mindoro (4)
Waukesha – Rufus King International (1)
Whitewater – Wilmot Union (2)
Division I – Watertown, Waukesha West, Sun Prairie
Division II – Pewaukee, New Berlin Eisenhower, Slinger
Division III – New Berlin West, Durand, Elk Mound
Division IV – Marathon, Dodgeland, Deerfield
Wildcard Teams – Bay Port (1), Green Bay Preble (1), Green Bay Southwest (1)

If the Green Bay regional doesn’t go how I predict, nothing in this will change as the top four teams are all Division I. If the Waukesha regional is won by Pewaukee, Rufus King would advance as Division I, Sun Prairie would advance as a wildcard, Sparta would advance as Division II, and Green Bay Southwest would not advance (based on my predictions, which could be way off what will actually happen).

On Friday, January 12th, Wisconsin has their regional competition at 5 locations in the state; 10 teams at each location. Feel free to post any predictions you have about how things will turn out.

I'll have results from the Whitewater regional on competition day.

Unrelated, but someone just posted on ADSIC that Rosemead (from LA County) put up 27,513.2 at Round 1. Holy frap, and I hadn't even noticed that last year's just-sub-40k team came from having had no team the two prior years! This is really cool to see!

Unrelated? This is the Round 1 thread!

I'm curious as to whether they included everyone from the team in determining the team score, or just the people from the first team registered by the school.
We registered 2 team, one with 3 people in each division, and another team with 1 honors, 2 scholastic, and 2 varsity. I wouldn't be surprised in people from the second team scored in the top 2 in each division for our school, so that could change what our score 'should' be, though it could also affect other teams just as much for all I know.

The team scores are just from those on the highest scoring full team. Yours would be the one with three people in each division.
