With Texas State being less than one week away, here's a poll, predictions, and results thread. Results from Regionals can be found here.

This state competition promises to be among the most exciting yet. The race is on between Dulles, Lubbock, and (probably) Highland Park, three teams which were (probably) within 1,000 of each other at regionals. I say probably because I don’t know what HP’s round 2 score would have been with another varsity, nor whether they will have another varsity at state.

Two major factors will have a major impact on who takes the title: test difficulty and subjective scoring. If the tests are hard, Lubbock (judging by its lower obj scores) may take a larger hit than its competitors. However, the big factor is subjective scoring, which may not be consistent across medium/large sizes. Stricter subjectives at the medium meet may give Lubbock a leg up over HP, but they’ll both be at a disadvantage relative to Dulles if the large school contest is more lenient in scoring. This makes predicting the outcome quite difficult.

With that being said, AcDec ultimately comes down to which individuals and teams work smarter and harder. The top spot is still up for grabs. Perhaps a dark horse (Pearce?) could surprise us. And Friendswood gaining another 2500 over the rest of the field and claiming a spot at nationals shouldn’t surprise anyone given their impressive score increase last year.

It seems probable that Lebanon Trail will defeat Bandera to earn Texas’ Division IV spot at nationals. But never underestimate how hard decathletes will work to become champions and compete on the national stage. Bandera could close the gap.

Good luck to all decathletes and coaches! Keep studying, and get some sleep before the competition.

What are the rules on roster changes, if any, between regionals and state? Could a team change their entire roster between regionals and state if they wanted to?

Your team at regionals is your team at state. Pretty sure it's locked in.

But if I submit a roster and one of my students was unable to attend regionals, can that student still compete at state? When was this roster due, anyway? December or January?

Yes as long as they regain eligibility which they have two opportunities to do

Been too busy preparing for our State competitions up here to be able to do in-depth predictions, but...

1. Dulles, 52,xxx
2. Lubbock ~51k
3. Highland Park ~51k (I think 2 and 3 will be close, but Lubbock has a big subs advantage in general, so my gut is going for them)
4. Friendswood ~50k (I genuinely think they have a very good shot at hitting 50k)
5. James E. Taylor ~48.5k (but I'm very unsure about this one -- could easily be Seven Lakes, Coppell...)

In related news, I hear Essay scores are in and basically awful across the board. :/ Large and Small/Medium all use the same graders, right?

I predict:
Dulles...... 9.2 + 8.5 + 9.1 + 8.5 + 8.6 + 7.8 = 51.7
Lubbock... 9.2 + 9.2 + 9.2 + 8.2 + 8.2 + 7.2 = 51.2
HP........... 9.4 + 9.0 + 8.9 + 8.9 + 7.2 + 6.8 = 50.2

There's two check points for grade checks between the beginning of the semester and state that they can regain eligibility, progress reports

How did the competition go? Did they run listening selections smoothly, for example? When is the awards ceremony tomorrow?

I know it gets chaotic afterwards, but do you plan on posting an update later this morning with some type of summary? I hope you and your team feel good about how it went this weekend and are rewarded for all your hard work these last 12 months in the next two hours.

I heard through the grapevine that Lubbock was 80 points away from beating Dulles and is contesting the results because they didn’t have the required number of interview judges/timers. Not confirmed but if so, this could get ugly.

I deleted my post because I was told that it was inaccurate.

From my current understanding, there were problems with both Interview and Essay.

* There was only one Interview judge per student for all of Medium/Small, which violates the coaches handbook (I don't know if that is binding)
* One of the 10 Essay judges gave everybody 920-980 and it seems like this judge did not read the essays, but just gave everybody 920-980. It is not clear how TAD split up essays among the 10 judges.

Original [inaccurate] post:
"A coach told me there were problems in all three subjectives:

1) Only one Speech judge per student for all of Medium/Small, which violates the coaches handbook (I don't know if that is binding)
2) Only one Interview judge per student for all of Medium/Small (see above)
3) One of the 10 Essay judges gave everybody 920-980 and it seems like this judge did not read the Essays, but just gave everybody 920-980. It is not clear how TAD split up essays among the 10 judges."
