Hey everyone! As anybody with experience on DDT can attest to, there are always a lot of really long dead periods on the board, most especially during the summer. Due to this, I wanted to get some conversations going, and I figured summer progress and team goals is a great place to start! For Morton, this year is definitely being handled differently than last year, as I learned a lot about trusting kids when they say they’re reading (without being the official coach in-class, I miss out on a lot of the proof I’d be able to see in there). As such, this summer’s focus is just going to be on making sure everybody is actually reading. High hopes for the season, but I’m staying quiet until I see the proof in the pudding smile.gif

How’s everyone else doing? Making good progress? Anybody have amazing/awful recruitment periods this year? Let us know!

I have a ton of plans over the summer, and I'm hoping they actually work! I think the guides (for the most part) are pretty interesting, and I'm really looking forward to this year! I'd like to say that this summer is shaping up to be better and more productive for both me and my team than last year, but it's a bit early to tell! I think the people we recruited this year are all great people, and the team seems to be bonding already, which is important (for me, at least). Granted, the summer just started (It hasn't even been a week yet), so there's a high chance that I'm being far too optimistic. XD

Recruitment is going better than last year, which is good! (I mean, last year, we had to recruit a new varsity two days before region, so almost anything is better!)

Besides that, it's extremely hard to tell how we're going to perform this year, but I'm hoping that the summer goes well!

Any chance y'all will have the depth to support your utterly insane honors division? I've so badly been wanting to see Wakeland stand with the best teams, as last year you and Labiba showed just how much your team is capable of! My H1 from last year (one of the 9k sophomores) is gunning for you, and I can't wait for the season to start! smile.gif

Speaking of planning, do we know a tentative date for the Katy Invitational AcDec meet using USAD Easy tests? I'm assuming either Saturday, Oct. 13th or 20th?

I can tell you that Ridge Point will have its largest AcDec class ever next year (32 or possibly even 33 although I'll probably lose a couple after we return in the fall) and that worries me a bit. I focused recruiting on honors kids as that's where we got hurt the most last year in competition. We have packets in hand which is also the first time that's ever been the case in school history as we normally don't have the resource guides until September. So my team will need to read this summer too although I'm sure it will be uneven. I also have high hopes and love the topic so I am excited and I think the kids are as well. I'm hoping we're much more competitive in the Katy regional next year! I'm taking our top three returning AcDec team members to an academic competition in July so we're still focused on that but will hit the ground running in mid to late-July.

Even though they are separate entities, keep in mind that DemiDec continues to rapidly expand the World Scholar's Cup competition and they are putting on more than 120 meets around the world this year. They have their first summer Global WSC Meet in Kuala Lumpur in less than three weeks and they may have 4000 students in close to 40 nations compete in that meet alone. Then they have the Barcelona Global Meet a month later which will top 2500 students from 50-or-so nations. I'm not sure how many of their DemiDec writers also help with WSC but some do. I should have asked Josephine who writes some of their resource guides about it - she had flown in to Houston from Idaho for the regional we hosted last month, but I didn't get a chance to ask that question.

I think you really need to consider starting a new social media group, probably on Facebook. I have never had a student join this message board in six years of coaching but probably have had 20-or-so join the Facebook group for the World Scholar's Cup competition. What does this message board have in terms of users? Maybe under 500? The Facebook group for WSC has over 27,000 users and the majority of those are students.

We actually had three live alpacas all set to take selfies with students (the humans would have had to take the photographs; I don't think alpacas have quite figured out the opposable thumb strategy for snapping photographs on their smart phones), but, unfortunately, it fell through at the last minute. We still expect 150+ competitors from Houston, Dallas and San Antonio competing to earn global round invitations to Spain, Malaysia or Australia.

I didn't know where to post this so: Apparently the schools in my area have decided to have a new competition: Hmong Academic Decathlon. Does USAD have a copyright on that term? If so they should send a cease and desist order. How rude to base the name of your new competition after one that has been established for so long. Somebody connected should reach out to USAD and check into this underhanded theft taking place in Fresno County.

Why are they calling it Hmong Academic Decathlon? That seems like such a random name. Does 'hmong' stand for something?
