So, on the topic of those missing Econ scores... apparently what they're doing now is taking those students' State Econ scores and counting those instead. So this may end up changing a couple of individual or team rankings; we'll see (I know Bishop Hendricken, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, and Martinsville all had counters who were affected -- all of whom were present at Nationals last year and used the same clickers then too without incident). Definitely not a perfect solution, but it seems like the best thing they can do at this point -- and I'm very glad they're doing something!

QUOTE (Dave C @ Apr 23 2018, 09:28 PM) *
Again, I didn't really care about the scholarships. We all knew that wasn't going to happen, and that was fine. I'm talking about a little more recognition for the kids. I'm talking about giving out 34 more medals...17 for MVP, 17 for high score. Or even just the high score, forget the MVP. And super quiz! Seriously, no mention of the fact that we even did it. Why bother adding the extra round of 39 questions when you aren't going to declare a winner? And I know that I am not the only coach who feels this way.

Ohhh, I totally misinterpreted what you meant by "forget the scholarships" -- my apologies! Yeah, I really don't understand the lack of awarding Super Quiz (especially since this means you won't get any results back, as if there was no point of participating in the first place), nor the lack of MVP/Top Scorer recognition. It seems like they just shied away from giving out anything in Division IV that comes with a scholarship in another division... even though they could obviously just not give the scholarship for those in Division IV. (They were originally not going to award individual overall in DIV either, which would have been ridiculous.) Hopefully we can work to change this for next year.

QUOTE (StanleyTree2.0 @ Apr 23 2018, 04:06 PM) *
They also added Div IV and cut out individual representatives without notifying anyone. No one knew there was only 18 invites until far too late.

There is absolutely zero transparency from USAD, and quite frankly it's unbelievable. No one knew what DIV meant. No one knew about the decrease in invites. No one knew that China wasn't eligible last year for team awards. No one knew. Because USAD didn't say anything. For as much money and time we put into this, it sure feels like the people who own this thing don't really much care about anything that happens.

The individual competitors thing was for sure really badly communicated. I had been told originally that there would be no decline in invites, and I was never informed otherwise until it was too late. Communication has been a problem with USAD for a very long time, and although it's wayyyy better than it was just a decade ago, there is still progress to be made.

So now we know what Division IV means:
No team MVP recognition.
No team high score recognition (forget the scholarship...not even a single medal for this, despite the thousands that are given out).
They create a second super quiz round to accommodate these extra teams, but there is no plaque or any recognition for your performance at all.

All for the low, low price of the exact same $600 fee that all the regular teams paid.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any distinction. I know we aren't the state champs, and that's fine. But seriously, these are basic items that you would think are assumed.

I understand that this setup is definitely not optimal, but also, you can't expect USAD to just be able to whip up 33% more scholarship money (tens of thousands of dollars per division) out of nowhere. I love that they're bringing in new teams, and if that's the sacrifice they have to pull off to make it work, so be it. USAD did make it abundantly clear that there would be no awarded scholarships for Division IV students, and that was the reason several teams (University from CA, South Central Calhoun from IA, Collegiate Academy from PA) rescinded their invitations in favor of competing in Online Nationals. That said, you definitely do have a point that it is unfair you had to pay the same amount as all the other teams -- I hadn't realized that, and that's not great.

Didn't affect us, but I hear that some economics scores were reported as zero, probably due to clicker issues. It wasn't noticed until coaches got score reports. No idea how that will affect standings and medals.

Both Rhode Island and us had our top Varsity scorer received 0's in Econ. (There were 12 others). We brought the concern to USAD immediatly after receiving scores and were told that it was our students fault. Both of our students have used the clickers in the past. Both reported that they submitted their scores with no problems. Very upset that, once again, USAD seems to treat inaccuracies as common place, and shifts the blame.

QUOTE (TinDefacto @ Apr 20 2018, 12:29 PM) *
They ended up deciding to just keep using Scantrons. When clickers work, they work well, but it's always good to have a backup plan!

Cancel that. Evidently they do not. As someone who spent hours organizing the clickers and setting them to the right channels, I have now been convinced that they are no more time-efficient than Scantrons -- and perhaps much less. 14 students received 0's for the one test that was completed with clickers -- Econ -- and there's no way to know if it was the students' fault or not. I will point, as Darrow did, out that two of the three affected individuals I know of were at Nationals last year and didn't seem to have any problems.

QUOTE (Dave C @ Apr 21 2018, 02:53 PM) *
Also, two of my kids tied on speech, down to the same decimal point. That's not super likely, is it? I'm thinking that has to be an error.

Almost certainly just a coincidence; I've seen that happen a fair amount!

I've poked Teeling about it again; unfortunately, I don't have the power to restore post counts. :/ But it WILL happen!!

Does this board even work any more? I will assume yes. So I got to spend the weekend at Elsinore High School for my son's water polo tournament, and I was wondering why it's Elsinore High even though it is not in the town of Elsinore (about 6 miles away)? I did like how Edison and Elsinore are both EHS Tigers.

It does still work! smile.gif People just need to recreate their accounts! I had wondered about Elsinore High too, especially since there isn't even any town called Elsinore -- it's Lake Elsinore! But apparently the Lake Elsinore USD extends into Wildomar, where Elsinore HS is, so it kind of makes sense...

Unrelatedly, I recently discovered that water polo does not involve riding horses in a swimming pool.

Edit: Made the Google Forms poll! Take it here! biggrin.gif

Results here (pretty) and here (raw).

IT'S BAAAACK!!!

The page that Marin and I ran back in 2013 has had new life breathed into it by our spiciest resident memelord RiceBoson. You can find it here! We're also always open to any memes people throw at us, so if you've got an idea (or lots), or found a good one that's relevant, let us know. biggrin.gif

Not sure how many yung'uns nowadays use Facebook, so we may launch a Twitter account or something. We'll see. tongue.gif (I tried attaching an image here, but have no idea how to do it...)

Division listings are out! biggrin.gif

32 states competing -- same as last year, but some differences. Two were not at Madison last year: Oregon (Central HS again) and Florida (University Christian HS). The two miissing are: Maryland (didn't have a full team) and South Carolina (what??). Really sad Dreher won't be there; they've been really good recently, and I hope this means their program hasn't folded.

Also, HOLY FRAP Oakwood is in Division II this year!! ohmy.gif

EDIT: Made poll!

Aaahhh. Why did the message board go down? I needed to vent....

So, CAD decides to put teams 11-20 in the morning judging for speech and interview. At the orientation, state director relays message from judges: "the scores always get better in the afternoon." Hmm. We lost 1489 in subjectives. My 2 varsity lost 498.3 in interview. Honors goes from 1000 to 810? While we were happy to beat University, we were hoping for top 10. When you go up 2800+ in objectives you'd like to think your chances are pretty good, but it wasn't to be. We missed out by 273 points. At least we beat UHS. Now if we could only figure out how to do it at regionals instead of at state (last two years).

Holy mackerel, that is an insane drop in subs. There's no way an Interview score that low could be warranted from one of your students... nor is there any good reason for the scores to inherently be better in the afternoon. That sounds infuriating. :/ That you managed to do so well though despite this is super impressive -- that is an insane objs leap!

What was your score without Super Quiz, if I may ask?

Second episode is now up!! biggrin.gif #2 - California State Countdown!

Nick's out of town, so Allan and I took over and chatted for a bit about California State stats, predictions, and random other things! Originally the plan was to have a couple of others too (and to talk for longer), but an impressively ridiculous succession of technical difficulties had different ideas. We were both quite tired, but we did it!! Hopefully we're able to follow this with other, more in-depth episodes in the future. smile.gif Hope at least one person is able to get some enjoyment out of it!

Ok, so this isn't about the medium test. What the heck USAD is up with the USAD Hard Economics and Lit tests? Taking the USAD Practice test one week and the Hard test the next saw declines of almost 3K for these two events for the six counters! Everything else was fine. Anyone else experience the freefall?

While we actually improved by roughly 100 points overall from PTB to USAD Hard (took them about 2 weeks apart), we also experienced a decline on the Hard Econ and Lit tests. Our 6 scorers went down a combined 2080 on those 2 exams. Not just you!

...You improved from PTB to USAD Hard, and only two weeks apart?! I mean, maybe USAD Hard isn't the same ridiculous difficulty this year as it usually is, but that's still really impressive! Usually it's many thousands of points harder overall, so dropping that much in two tests doesn't surprise me that much. (Was this after Regionals or in the pre-season?)

Thanks for starting this thread!! I've been out of the country on a family emergency and haven't been able to be online much, so I wasn't able to even do predictions. sad.gif

That said, I have a bit of time now, and it looks like CDO won with 47,303.5! (I love that someone was live-updating ADSIC!!) Congrats!!

1. CDO 47,303.5
2. Hamilton 45,129.0
3. Mountain View Mesa 44,959.9 (back to top 3 after last year!)
4. Westwood
5. Cesar Chavez
6. Skyline
7. Seton Catholic 40,734 - YAY 40k!! smile.gif
8. BASIS Peoria(!)
9. BASIS Chandler
10. Red Mountain(!)

Piper Gray won with 9,536! (Been hearing different reports on the decimal.) That's the highest-recorded score out of California (and -- currently -- 6th ever) and that is amazing.

Also, Savage Hess of Skyline won top Varsity! Weren't even on the poll. ;P
