Another video today! This time it's about studying both as an individual and as a program- active recall, active studying, and spaced repetition. Hope you guys enjoy!

Video

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who has a tendency toward saying Nick's name wrong (swapping the vowels in the last name) smile.gif

It has been this way my whole life tongue.gif My username here is an easy way to remember how to pronounce my name smile.gif

It's not pronounced like Sigh-No-Diss? None of us will ever get it right, I swear tongue.gif

Hah! I need to start saying it more. It's in one of the early podcasts...

But no, it's Sih-NO-Dis (emphasis in the middle, and it's a short "i" at the beginning). Where's tindefacto to school us all on linguistics...

If you can't tell, I'm REALLY excited about the music this year. I made a mixtape based off of topics/artists/songs/films/etc. that I found in the Music outline...here's a link--enjoy!

I understand the cultural significance of It's Gonna Rain...is that what you guys are talking about? From my perspective it is not pleasant to listen to. It would be awesome as a sample in another song, and I think it was clearly an excellent early example of ambient, minimalist music...it's not my favorite, though.

I'm curious--Peter and Sebastian--what makes you like the song so much, though smile.gif

Thanks for Aquarius and White Rabbit, but sorry USAD...I hate you. "It's Gonna Rain" is way worse that Dripsody. It could be used for torture purposes.

I was playing the selected works for my wife and when this one came on we both bust out laughing. The nice thing about it being so painful and odd is that for Listening Selection question purposes, you probably only need to hear it once or twice to identify it...

The funny thing about living in the 21st century is that most of the songs USAD probably tried so hard rolleyes.gif to acquire is that they are free on streaming platforms, like Spotify...

That being said, I made a Spotify playlist with (most of) the selected works! I couldn't find "REQUIEM AETERNAM," “OUT THERE” or “DIES IRAE," or at least the correct versions. I also included the whole piece for pieces that are split into movements (Coltrane & Reich).

Here's a blurb I wrote in Xathlon's Facebook Group:

QUOTE
Since the music is so accessible this year, at least in comparison to previous years, we are going to try to make some good Spotify playlists for students and coaches as part of our "Music for Decathletes" program!

Beyond just the Selected Works (the playlist I linked here), we'll be taking music from the Resource Guide--whether it was heavily covered, lightly referenced, or tangentially related to a point that was made--and construct playlists that will allow students to immerse themselves in the Transformational Decade. Of course, the Resource Guides won't be out for a bit...so here's something to get you started!

So I'll post my playlists somewhere on this forum if people would like to see them. Happy to take recommendations!

This is really wonderful smile.gif Great job Phil and Sebastian for setting this up. We need more competitions like this throughout the year!

I wonder if hitting their facebook page would be a reasonable thing to do. That's such a huge bummer. One of the best parts about succeeding is getting rewarded for it.

It's reasonable. All businesses are subject to this...We live in a world where the Internet makes things a lot more transparent, and USAD needs to learn that and adjust a lot of their behaviors.

3 alternatives to clickers:

1) tablets (comparable price to clickers) or computers

2) Scantrons that can be read more easily (there are some iPad apps that scan bubble pages)

3) stick with Scantrons

anything else? I think option #1 is the most practical in the long term, besides #3

Are there any transcripts of these podcasts?

Even if not, thank you for interviewing him! Terrific story!

That is the plan! Unfortunately Anchor recently updated so it isnít an automated process to get transcripts anymore. Sometime soon we will either do direct transcriptions or blog post versions of the interviews, though smile.gif

Third episode is up with guest Phil Cerami!

Here's a link -- let us know what you think. This one is the first one on one "interview" we've done, and it's the first in our "Road to Nationals" series, capturing a glimpse into the world of a coach on his way to nationals (for the first time as a coach). Absolutely worth a listen!

You could make a decathlon meme Instagram account!

Do people put memes on Instagram??

(Does that question make me old?)

Yes. Yes it does.

Super old, and I'm older than you, Sebastian.
