I was looking back at high school and realized I have very few real friends (I believe the DDT name for the mood I am in is sad panda). I am already a little frightened at the onset of college, and I don't want to make this mistake again.

What are some tips for making good friends in college?

At the same time what are things not to do?

I would appreciate the help of people that have been/are there to let me know what it's like on that front.

When you get to your dorm room, if you don't have anywhere to go and you're just chilling there. Leave the door open. Play some music and people might wander in. Just be friendly.

Ok. Sounds like a good idea (that is if my 70s power ballads don't scare them off wink.gif ).

70's power ballads will either scare people, or invite them in. There will be no middle-ground, but in that respect, there shouldn't be, for those scared away probably aren't worth associating with.

Just sayin'.

remember that everyone is in the same boat as you: they know no one (or almost no one) there. so be friendly and outgoing. find people who like doing the same things you do (football? frisbee? binge drinking?), and then invite them to do those with you.

All three at once?

Clearly, you should transfer to ASU, and we should become friends.

Lol, can't afford the transfer, but if I'm ever near ASU, I'll give to a call.

the dorm thing is pretty true. I mean, you wouldn't even think about it, but if you can get in during the first few weeks (when *everyone* is feeling awkward about living with strange people they've never been around) and keep an open door policy, that's great.

also, clubs.

I will definitely do that if I get a dorm with an inside entry.

yeah, clubs and sports make for instant friendship groups.

so do frats, but that's kinda like purchasing friends.

My schools only got one frat that I know about. The Christian service frat. They don't even have frat houses as an option.

On that note, will it be a problem making friends if I don't drink/smoke?

I'm pretty sure our dorm will hate Ian and me, just because of the ridiculous music / obnoxious comments that will float out our door constantly.

It's going to be epic :D
