I should appeal every year if it gets this much discussion going.

I will post an explanation of our thought process when we get a decision. In the meantime, if you don't think we can change this system to be better, you haven't been paying attention. The system in Texas is already miles better than it was not ten years ago.

They could even go to the Tang and Song era of China- the golden age of art and poetry and an economic boom. Maybe Vikings or Crusades or Rise of Islam, Native American societies of North America, Protestant Reformation, Mesopotamia or Persian Empires, Egypt, Colonial America, South Africa, Southeast Asia...

QUOTE (Honourable Honors @ Feb 25 2018, 05:49 PM) *
I heard through the grapevine that Lubbock was 80 points away from beating Dulles and is contesting the results because they didn’t have the required number of interview judges/timers. Not confirmed but if so, this could get ugly.

Other way around, we're appealing and we lost by 91

How did the competition go? Did they run listening selections smoothly, for example? When is the awards ceremony tomorrow?

But if I submit a roster and one of my students was unable to attend regionals, can that student still compete at state? When was this roster due, anyway? December or January?

Yes as long as they regain eligibility which they have two opportunities to do

Two opportunities? How does that work?

There's two check points for grade checks between the beginning of the semester and state that they can regain eligibility, progress reports

What are the rules on roster changes, if any, between regionals and state? Could a team change their entire roster between regionals and state if they wanted to?

Your team at regionals is your team at state. Pretty sure it's locked in.

If Montgomery isn't a flash-in-the-pan group this year, they may do well down there. Still don't think Hightower will have the heat to compete in 5A. Has Splendora competed recently?

Summit 5a to 6a
Lebanon Trail 4a to 5a
Turner 6a to 5a
Elkins 5a to 6a
Lake Ridge 5a to 6a

I think Summit stayed in 5a

Here are the large school results from Region VIII. I think Melanie shared the medium school results. (They are all beasts!) I'm excited that our region is becoming more competitive! Martin HS finally have coaches that care about AcDec as much as the rest of us. Mr. G left an under-supportive Duncanville to join Wylie. It's great to see the passion back in his eyes. Arlington HS only placed second, but it was still super fun!

Martin 42,845.1
Arlington 41,561.1
Wylie 39,243.3
Dubiski 38,454.1 (first year in the program coached by Sam Gaskill, who also loves AcDec, former Duncanville coach)
Mansfield 36,344.6
Lamar 34,940.3

On a side note, one of our honors, Darcey Britton, scored 8,967.6! We've never had someone score close to 9K!
And... she's only a junior! biggrin.gif

Congratulations! Great score from Darcey holy moly! Hopefully she can get there at state!

We were thinking about "60s in America" which would be super cool- Civil Rights, Vietnam, Kennedy, Space Race (could recycle a science again), Cold War, pop art, brutalism, tons of great music (licenses may be hard).

8th Place: Garland High School, Garland, Garland Independent School District, 158 points

2nd place- 1997
3rd place- 1999
3rd place- 2000
4th place- 2003
4th place- 1996
4th place- 1998
5th place- 2001
5th place- 2004
6th place- 1994
Close calls- 11th ('93), 12th ('92), 13th ('95, '02, '05)

Top 25s- 17
State appearances- 26

Garland is likely to be the most surprising team to see up in the top 10, as they have not seen major success over the history of this message board. However, from 1996 to 2004, Garland placed in the top 5 every single year but once, playing the third wheel to the dominant years of Taylor and Dobie and then coming up short in the post-Taylor years. The Owls first qualified for state in 1991 and would continue to qualify until 2016, only to make it back in 2017. The program immediately improved upon first qualifying for state, and within four years had jumped to 6th in the state. After a slight road bump in 1995, they then went on a tear that would make them a powerhouse and one of the two best teams in the Dallas area along with Nimitz. They would go 4th, 2nd, 4th, 3rd, 3rd, and 5th in a series of years that are both impressive and saddening in that it never amounted to a championship. 1998 is particularly heart-breaking as it was a year when they were less than 1,000 from winning. In '99 and '00 they were the best team that simply could not keep up with the arms race between Taylor and Dobie. After an off year in '02, they were third again in '03 and '04, fifth in '05. After this, they dropped into the late teens and 20s, and even further into the 2010s. Garland may be the forgotten powerhouse of the 90s and early 00s, but here they will be remembered as an amazing program that simply peaked at the exact wrong time.

9th place: Rockwall High School- Rockwall, Rockwall ISD, 157 points

Champions- 2012
Champions- 2013
Champions- 2014
2nd place- 2011
3rd place- 2010
3rd place- 2016
4th place- 2009
7th place- 2007

State Appearances- 13
Top 25s- 13

Rockwall put together one of the best strings of success in Texas history from 20010 until 2014 where they went 3rd, 2nd, and then won state three times in a row. This may be the most successful group of teams in history in such a short span of time, as they have three of the top ten individual teams of all time in that span. The person responsible for the initial success during this time was David Gear, who sent Rockwall to its first state appearance in 2005, when they finished 16th overall. The school would jump into the top 10 only two years later in '07 (7th), and then began their run of dominance in '09 with a 4th place, followed by the run. The 2011 team is the 7th best team ever, and is the best team to not have won state (and took 8 of 9 top three places at medium, which is absurd). Their string of championships from 2012 to 2014 features the 6th best team ever in 2013 and 2nd best ever in 2014. After 2014 the the dynasty ended as they dropped to 18th- only to come back and get 3rd in 2016. Last year they finished 25th in their lowest finish since 2005, but their lowest is still better than most programs. A string of continued success has put them in the top programs in state history. They are the best program in the state this decade (although Highland may have something to say about that by the end of it), and put together a dominant string of performances that may be the 2nd best era in Texas history.

Hey everyone, so I wanted to do this for a while and figured why not now. I have wanted to write a blog about my experiences both coaching and competing, and figured I'd post it here to see if this has traction. Feel free to comment over there- with the lack of action on the board for anyone except for a few, maybe a new place would be beneficial.

We're frozen in for two days, and I can only hope our kids are reading. I'm getting cabin fever, which brought me back to this:

10th place: Highland Park High School- University Park, Highland Park ISD, 142 points

Champions- 2016
Champions- 2017
2nd place- 2015
4th place- 2012
4th place- 2013
4th place- 2014

State Appearances- 22
Top 25s- 8

Highland Park has put together a six year period of dominance on par with all but the best of programs- Rockwall from '09 to '16, Pearland from '08 to '15, Plano from '04 to '07 all come to mind when comparing the run that Highland Park is currently going through. Only two programs have really strung together a series of performances that must be better, which is the late 90s Taylor and late 90s/early aughts Dobie, undoubtedly the two best runs of programs in Texas history (that Rockwall run was special though...). Highland Park has been a state competitor since the 90s but never really pushed through to the upper levels- the closest they came was a 26th in '91 and 27th in '94 and a 20th in '93. They were mostly a team that just showed up to state for most of its existence. Highland Park was a sleeping giant- THE wealthiest part of Texas and a great student body meant that they were just waiting for coaches that wanted to put them time in.

Three straight 4th places seemed like the program's peak, but instead they kept going. They lost in '15 in one of the closest finishes in Texas history with three teams within 300 points of each other, placing second between Pearland and Friendswood. They the WON another three dog race in '16, beating Coppell and Rockwall on the last test to win it all for the first time. They followed up their first win with one of the most dominating performances of all time, breaking the state scoring record and having the third best team in Texas history. Bergeron and Alvarado, as well as the preceding coach (who's name escapes me) should be congratulated for building an amazing program that has become one of the best in Texas, and will continue to do so. Two decades worth of state appearances with nothing much to show for it has transformed into a historical run of dominance.

None of the tests were of a normal difficulty, so if you feel you did poorly I guarantee you didn't. It ranged from somewhat difficult (music, sosci, sci) to "would be the toughest in a given set" (math, eco) to unfairly hard (lit, art). If you stayed the same since your last meet that is miraculous and should be celebrated.
