QUOTE (ahundredjarsofsky @ Mar 6 2018, 04:28 AM) *
I'd like Joni Mitchell & Woodstock. Early Pink Floyd?

Curious what the poetry selections will be. I'm rooting for Adrienne Rich & maybe some early June Jordan/ Audre Lorde/ Amiri Baraka.

I'd like some Joni Mitchell, too. I couldn't find as much of her pre-1970 songs that I like as much as her songs from the 1970s. Maybe "Both Sides Now" or "Night in the City." What are other Joni tunes you would like?

Maybe a Michel Legrand/Alan & Marilyn Bergman tune like "Windmills of Your Mind" or "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" Probably shouldn't count out Henry Mancini for film music, either.

I agree that the Beatles would probably be too expensive. Although Yoko might give it up if Part 4 of the Music Resource is exclusively about her... and written by her.

Maybe a Beatles cover? Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends" would be nice, plus it has a tie-in to Woodstock. Still too expensive?

They gotta have some Motown!

They should probably have one surf rock tune... maybe Jan and Dean if they can't get Beach Boys.

My jazz choice (trying to fit in with the theme) is "Original Faubus Fables" by Charles Mingus.

"Crazy" recorded by Patsy Cline, written by Willie Nelson would be a nice nod to country and Nashville.

One musical theater nod I'd like to see is "The Sweetest Sounds" from Richard Rodgers' musical "No Strings."

If they expand beyond 1969, I'd like to see something from Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" that was commissioned to open the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1971. Also from Leonard Bernstein, possibly one of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story that he completed in 1960.

Looking at Wikipedia lists of classical works and composers, I wouldn't be surprised if they picked something from Elliott Carter's String Quartet No. 2 (it won a Pulitzer, and it seems perfectly bizarre for USAD). Steve Reich's "Piano Phase" wouldn't surprise me. Other American composers that wouldn't surprise me include Samuel Barber, Milton Babbitt, Roy Harris, Vincent Persichetti, Walter Piston, or a young Philip Glass.

Hello, all. My name is Brandon Pedigo, and I am one of the coaches at Plano East Senior High (Plano, TX). I did have/do have another account in the DDT group, but the password recovery e-mails were getting blocked by my district, and I have not been able to log in or post in several months. Years, even? So I'm back with a bright, shiny new profile (and an email address that won't be filtered by my district).

I was also a student at Plano East Senior High and graduated in 1993, the year PESH won the USAD National Championship. I wasn't on that team, but our superintendent sent teams to compete in a similar competition in his previous district in Volusia County, Florida. Because the PESH Ac Dec team was already competing at Nationals in Arizona, I got a free trip to Daytona Beach. We lost to Plano Senior High's Ac Dec team at that competition, but hey... free trip to the beach!

Also, I teach AP Music Theory. I probably like the music fundamentals section most years more than just about any coach. I probably understand it more than most coaches. Then again, I spend several weeks in my AP class teaching similar concepts. It's almost ridiculous to expect so much theory in the Ac Dec competition. I wish USAD focused more generally on the fundamental topics, like a music appreciation or music history class would. But that's just my two cents.
