Individual competitors have never received Nationals overall recognition, no matter how much higher they scored than everybody else. See the top varsity last year, for example. He was an individual competitor but did not receive overall recognition.

Does anybody know whether USAD is open to changing that, even if not this year?

It'd be cool if Jonathon Marek broke into the top three Honors like Tim You in 2015.

Marek already did this in 2016, as a junior. He was third DI honors last year. Are you thinking it will be harder to do that this year?

Just got home from San Antonio; we took the kids to the riverwalk to celebrate and grab a late lunch before heading back. We had great support from our parents- we had five kids' parents come as well as our principal, which was awesome to see. My parents also showed up, and told me this was better than when I won as a student, and I think I agree. It was an amazing year as a coach being able to help guide this group of kids. I think the concept of team is pretty well embodied in our scores- there is not a major spread between our kids. Last year, we had a major split between seniors and juniors; it was a coaching error that we just didn't notice as a big deal until state. It wasn't negative, they just weren't close. This year was the exact opposite- the team was incredibly close and it made us a better team. No one wanted to let anyone else down. At state, I had to do no coaching- the kids knew what they wanted to do, and were asleep before I needed to tell them, awake before I needed to wake them, and studying every second they could without me telling them to. Their single-minded drive to win was motivating to me as a coach. This has been the most rewarding year of my ten years of decathlon because these kids are incredible.

We were able to overcome some real tough hits that would have wrecked us if we didn't have that depth. One essay under 300, and another completed no scored because he wrote on sosci when he clicked science; these things would have stressed us out completely, and it was a major bummer as that cost them individually, but as a team we knew we would be fine. We took major deficiencies we had early on- SoSci, Art, Music- and either smoothed them over or turned them into strengths. We took some losses in other areas (Math, Sci) but they were more than overcome by the improvements we made in our weak spots.

There's a lot of people I want to talk about here that have either helped our team get to this point or are great people who I've met along the way or deserve more praise than they've gotten. I've started to learn that the way I used to post on here- brash, prediction-heavy, little regard for "feelings"- is no longer the responsible thing to do and honestly hasn't been since I've started coaching. So, instead of going on paragraph-long expansions of thoughts, I just want to thank a whole lot of people (which will of course be longer than I'd like). The Brunsells at Taylor for showing us what a team as a family looks like, for pushing us every step of the way, and for being incredible people. Coach Simons at Friendswood for letting us know it ain't ever over (and never count out Friendswood). Higginbotham at Dobie for being one hell of a coach who deserves all the praise he should get. Jackson and Thompson at Nimitz for being such supporters of what I had been talking about doing for years. Rick and Duff for being pretty awesome at running meets and being so open to communication. Almost lastly, my old coaches at Pearland for giving me the path my life is on- Layne for bringing me in and making us a team, Crossno for his advice and his ability to keep us ordered and focus, and Cogswell for bringing a personality that made it easier to work as hard as we did.

Lastly, our other half, Kelsey Halfen. She does everything I can't and does it incredibly. We don't do anything without her.

Lastly lastly, the kids. I'm so proud of them. I asked them to do the insane, and they believed in it. But more importantly, they believed in themselves. I got into coaching to give students the feeling I had when I won. I didn't realize what the kids would give me.

Congrats Highland Park. See you next year smile.gif

Beautiful post. Others may already know, but this is actually a team of six scholastics and three varsities. Has anybody else ever even heard of that existing before? I'm genuinely curious.

Well done, Highland Park, Dulles, and Taylor! What a season! Go Texas!

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/State/Texas/2017

I was writing down the names of the winners (or some) in the all-around. We're supposed to get the official results sent via email tonight, but I don't think they've been sent out yet. But if anyone wants to know the top five all-around I feel comfortable sending it to them since it was announced publicly (with winning scores for the gold medalists). There were also 1000's in interviews (all three levels), Math (honors), Econ (again at honors), Lit (probably two, maybe all three levels, I forget which), and Art (just one at scholastic). That's all from the large school meet.

Thanks for writing that down! Would love to know! Post them here, PM me, or edit the page, whichever you prefer.

Disclaimers:

1) There is no way to guarantee who is voting, or whether people aren't voting multiple times.

2) Regionals scores remain unknown for many Decathletes not on the list of options, most notably everybody from Pearland, Klein, and Friendswood. As of Friday 6:30pm CST, Mitchell Jackson of Pearland has received two write-in votes for top varsity and nobody else has received more than one write-in vote in any category.

My Mount Michael team wins Nebraska! First small school to do that here. My kids and I are super pumped!

Score was 42,830 for nine tests plus team super quiz. High score was 7698 for nine subjects...I'm pretty proud of him. That's a team record by about 500 points.

Well done, Dave!! First small school team to win Nebraska state in the 33-year history of the competition! I hope you are very proud, indeed!

Anyone know why La Reina isn't going to State?

Anybody's game in Divison 2. Top five separated by about 650 points. Past experience shows you can't discount teams a couple thousand points down either. Hopefully our S2 will get her act together. Everyone else is on board for the big push.

All of the top four DII teams are seasoned and highly competitive! And rookie Calabasas may be eager to prove itself. I bet Valencia and Westminster are both chomping at the bit to beat the other. SoS is also right that a team like Beverly Hills could make a big jump. Exciting race...

Rosemead from LA County scored 43.4k with Super Quiz and did not advance.

The California wild card cutoff is somewhere between Rosemead's 43.4k with SQ, and El Rancho's 44k with SQ.

You may be a scoremonger if you want to compile timestamps from the Arizona scorekeeper's past emails... and average them together to predict the exact time he will send out 2017 regionals scores.

I can't do that with much precision because I have only been on his mailing list for 3 years, but maybe somebody here has more timestamps... :-3
