Greetings to all Decathletes: It is my pleasure to announce the Academic Decathlon curricular theme for the 2011-2012 season. The full subject area outlines will also be published in the Academic Decathlon® Study Guide, which will begin shipping on May 15, 2011. The curricular theme for 2011–2012 will be: The Soviet Union Following is some general information on the topics in each of the subject areas. • SUPER QUIZ: The Super Quiz™ will focus on the topic of the Cold War with an emphasis on political conflict, military tension, and proxy wars. • LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE: The language and literature curriculum will include critical reading, one novel, four interviews, one short story, and two poems. The featured novel will be Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. • ART: The art curriculum will cover art fundamentals and will focus on socialist realism and Soviet nonconformist art during the Cold War. • MUSIC: The music curriculum will cover basic elements of music theory and will focus on Soviet music of the 1920s. • SCIENCE: The science curriculum will focus on the topic of space exploration and will include a case study on the Soyuz programme. • ECONOMICS: The economics curriculum will cover fundamental economic concepts, microeconomics, and macroeconomics. The economics curriculum will also include a thematic section focused on socialism and the Cold War. • MATHEMATICS: The mathematics curriculum will cover topics in algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. But music should really be a broad representation of Russia's centuries upon centuries of great music.
