Can we post stories from nationals here? I can report that Kansas is super windy, and I'm happy to say that only ONE of my varsity students climbed on the roof of the rest area pavilion and then fell off.

Yes, please share stories for those of us who can't make it! biggrin.gif This is such an inspiring post in particular! If I ever coach someday, I too want to measure my success in year-over-year decreases in the number of varsity students who climb onto roofs and fall off cool.gif

Does this board even work any more? I will assume yes.

It works well, but I'm seeing many more people (especially students) talking AcaDec on the Academic Decathlon Memes Facebook page and Google hangouts; that is, they seem to want more efficient forms of communication than a message board.

Intriguing that 9 of 15 respondents in D1 predictions think Canyon Del Oro can jump ahead of Whitney Young. That would be a first since 2009 (and it's not even clear how they compared in 2009 state scores because Illinois had no Interview at state that year).

Are there any schools that do both Scholar's Cup and Academic Decathlon? What is that like?

Must be a copy-paste error. Enloe "qualified" (only team in NC) but did not compete. No teams from MO and MT. I double-checked with my score packet and the archived USAD site.

Gracias! I believe it. The ADSIC page looks good now.

A challenge for anyone who wants to try: in these web archives, I keep trying to get Nationals/1999 medals (still unknown on ADSIC), but I keep getting redirected to 1998 or 2000...

Added a poll! biggrin.gif Alas, very limited in number of questions... may do the ol' Google Forms thing again (and I'll be better at sharing results this time around!).

Edit: Made the Google Forms poll! Take it here! biggrin.gif

Results here (pretty) and here (raw).

Well-designed poll! Can't wait to see how the wisdom of the crowds does this year... especially if we can get more people to take it. smile.gif

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/State/North_Carolina says W.G. Enloe HS did participate in Nationals/2003.

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/State/Montana and https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/State/Missouri do not have listings for 2003.

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/Nationals says 38 states participated in Nationals/2003.

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/Nati...all_Team_Scores lists 37 states.

https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/Nati...From_Each_State lists 40 states, including the names of top scoring students from Missouri, Montana, and North Carolina, even though these three states are not listed in Overall Team Scores.

Any idea how this came to be?

I edited my vote to change third place from Cesar Chavez to Westwood. I think Westwood is better than Cesar Chavez at increasing late in the season. Cesar Chavez always seems to decrease / stagnate after winter break for some reason.

I was also a student at Plano East Senior High and graduated in 1993, the year PESH won the USAD National Championship. I wasn't on that team, but our superintendent sent teams to compete in a similar competition in his previous district in Volusia County, Florida. Because the PESH Ac Dec team was already competing at Nationals in Arizona, I got a free trip to Daytona Beach. We lost to Plano Senior High's Ac Dec team at that competition, but hey... free trip to the beach!

Welcome! Was the similar competition also Academic Decathlon, a quiz bowl, or another contest? Really curious!

I'm not asking for rubric changes. I'm asking for a judge who actually reads the essays instead of giving every single essay 920-980. I hope that isn't too much for us to ask for.

How many essays do you want them to grade? How many competitions have you volunteered to grade for? In LAUSD, we rely on completely over-worked teachers to volunteer multiple days to read hundreds of essays. It is not easy, and IT IS a lot to ask for.

I have volunteered as an essay judge at multiple competitions; I cannot remember the exact number. California and Texas do face much larger numbers of essays than anything I've ever done, but even a 14-year-old alternate grading some essays would be better than somebody who didn't read them. Massachusetts asks alumni from all over the country to grade essays.

Essay has been a problem child for, what, 32 years now? I really don't see a solution for judging inconsistencies that wouldn't introduce different ways inconsistencies would emerge - or that wouldn't introduce complexities that we'd have to test out to see if they would scale out over a large competition.

Grammar, for example. Is there way to draw up a rubric for it that considers both the length of the response as well as the accuracy of the grammar? Do we say that each response must include a minimum of 25 sentences to receive full points for grammar, with 4% of the points for grammar deducted per sentence below 25 submitted? OK, that is a start... now, if there is an essay with 30 sentences, of which 6 are grammatically incorrect and another essay is submitted with 40 sentences, of which 8 are grammatically incorrect, do they score the same? Or does the paper with 8 total errors fare worse than the one with 6, even though percentage wise they have the same rate of errors? Are some errors worse than others? IE, is an incomplete sentence worse than using a colon where a semi-colon is called for? Can we see a points breakdown of how the errors relate to each other?

And even if all this was hammered out, then we have coaches filing appeals because a punctuation mark looks to them to be a period, even though the judge said it was a comma.

And then we get used to it again, even after we thought it was fixed.

Then we have the content portion... how are rubrics drawn up for it so that we can tell the students what MUST be in each essay? If coaches have rubrics, would they be able to grade their own team's essays to see how they stack up with their scores? Back to helping out the students, when I taught AP, I could tell kids how to both write and grade a FRQ. I never had that ability with an AcDec essay. But to do that, there would have to be a question writing committee that could prepare the questions well in advance of the curriculum release.

I'm not asking for rubric changes. I'm asking for a judge who actually reads the essays instead of giving every single essay 920-980. I hope that isn't too much for us to ask for.

I wish we had better funding for education and Academic Decathlon so everybody didn't have to suffer the consequences of such limited resources like this.

A coach told me there were problems in all three subjectives:

1) Only one Speech judge per student for all of Medium/Small, which violates the coaches handbook (I don't know if that is binding)
2) Only one Interview judge per student for all of Medium/Small (see above)
3) One of the 10 Essay judges gave everybody 920-980 and it seems like this judge did not read the Essays, but just gave everybody 920-980. It is not clear how TAD split up essays among the 10 judges.

Edit: Somebody else just told me there were two Speech judges for all of Medium/Small

All three of these points need to be addressed, but Lubbock High has nothing to do with poorly run subjectives. Like all the rest of the medium and small schools, they competed with what the state organizers put in front of them.

Isnít Frisco hosting nationals as well?

I misunderstood the Speech problem. Speech was ok. Interview did have one judge. I deleted my inaccurate post and wrote an updated post with a copy of the inaccurate post in smaller text but that didn't stop the inaccurate from being quoted up there. My apologies.

I deleted my post because I was told that it was inaccurate.

From my current understanding, there were problems with both Interview and Essay.

* There was only one Interview judge per student for all of Medium/Small, which violates the coaches handbook (I don't know if that is binding)
* One of the 10 Essay judges gave everybody 920-980 and it seems like this judge did not read the essays, but just gave everybody 920-980. It is not clear how TAD split up essays among the 10 judges.

Original [inaccurate] post:
"A coach told me there were problems in all three subjectives:

2) Only one Interview judge per student for all of Medium/Small (see above)

Yes as long as they regain eligibility which they have two opportunities to do

Two opportunities? How does that work?
