I hate to reduce so much of human action to this concept, but really, I think there's something to be said for the application of the law of inertia in everyday life. If you keep going, and are living around people doing the same thing, your chances of success really are substantially higher.

This my main considerations when thinking against a gap year... but I've tried to this, tried to just keep going and moving forward normally, but it's not working. I barely go to school as it these days, why would I ever go to class when it's not even mandatory? Even if I did go to off to college next fall, I wouldn't really be going anywhere. I can't imagine myself being willing to fully dedicate myself to class.

Beyond that, every grief counselor I've spoken to and every person who has lost a parent advised me not to delay the grieving process. I don't want to spend years in school focusing most intensely on my studies, when I really need to be focusing on just moving on.

In any case, thanks for your lengthy RM-like advice tongue.gif

I dunno, I mean, I'm having issues assessing the real value/reason why I'm at college at all, and that's with no gap year and no super-close deaths. I kinda feel like if I were to take time off, I wouldn't finish. But you're not me, so I guess that's just more anecdotal crap to file away with all the other anecdotal crap.

Since you didn't answer TTTA, what's your planned major?

I'm really not sure anymore. My strongest interest is in pharmacy, though.

So, something like chem/biochem and then off to med school, then?

That's about what I've planned, yeah.

Thanks. Anyway, I was pretty much just planning on working for my year off, with maybe a little bit of travel. I've thought about doing community college, but if I end up going to Rice *fingers crossed* I don't think the credits will transfer, and taking classes would to me defeat the purpose of a year off.

I guess no one creeps on my facebook enough to realize, but my mother died about two months ago, and my great grandfather a few weeks before her. On top of that, my grandmother, the one that I live with and is basically a second mother to me, has been in and out of the hospital since September and has had several very close brushes with death since then. I've been shuffling back from place to place for the past month or so; yesterday was my first day back home in weeks.

This is why I want a gap year. I don't even really think I've fully processed what's happened yet, and trying to immediately sink into college just doesn't sound appealing to me. I'm fully aware of the dangers of not going back; my dad tried to take a semester off at Tech and never went back. But I don't think that will happen to me. Working some crappy minimum wage job would never satisfy me, intellectually or financially.

Where is everyone applying/going (even though most of the regular posters on the board are already in college or beyond)? Since this has been a terribly stressful year, I'm only applying to Rice and UT, and I'm considering a gap year. Thoughts?

yess really. the whole ten subject thing is an integral part of ad, but probably a lot more people would participate if you could choose which categories you participated in. like maybe there could be both team (full ten subject) and individual (individuals choosing which subjects to participate in).

I guess things are alright for me, especially when compared the huge emotional/academic hole I constructed for myself last year. I'd rather not have had to move to a new high school so late in my high school career, but that's not really anything serious.

Honestly though, medication can really help. I had zero motivation to get anything done last year, and I mean really basic things. I wouldn't get out of bed for days, just sleep and wallow. Then I went on meds for depression. It doesn't make your problems go away, but it makes life worth living on a daily basis. When you're on a more even keel emotionally, it's so much easier to fix other things -- like grades which are on a slippery slope to failure -- in life. Medication may not be for you, but it can certainly work.

I think Scribblenauts (Click) might just be the coolest game in existence. Basically you can write tons of words and let them interact with each other, the dictionary is some 22,000 words including lots of memes and stuff (Longcat and Tacgnol, ceiling cat, the LHC... goes on and on)

Things I've done fiddling around with it for half an hour:

-Let God duke it out with a Kraken, Cthulhu, the Devil, a T-rex (Beats all these easily) and then a vampire, who turns God into a vampire unless you arm him with a stake. Also if you drop an existentialist near god he runs away scared.
-Dropped an elf, halfling, wizard, and dwarf down, then put a ring on the little dude you control, they follow you and stuffs, then I put the ring on the wizard, who goes nuts and kills everyone.
-Flew a helicopter around with a chain attached, then put the chain on a t-rex and generally pissed it off. Then I used a mind control device on the t-rex and rode it around. Also, velociraptors.

Will, what did you think of their costumes?

I imagine you can determine what is authentically Russian and what isn't from your house, right?

I forgot to watch the ice dancing. sad.gif Even wrote it down in my planner, too...

You really missed out. The performances of the Canadian/younger American duos were amazing.

The Russian paired figure skaters' Aboriginal dance was really uncomfortable. Their outfits and music were embarrassingly unauthentic.

I'm sure your room isn't perfectly clean. It could have been a really old hair, from when someone else stayed in your dorm. Or, maybe the hair landed on your clothes and you brought it in. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this hair.
