QUOTE (fyzics @ Feb 5 2018, 01:11 PM) *
Hey, everyone! Sorry I've been so quiet. It's been a bit of a rough year, both with this team (it never quite gelled the way I'd hoped, and I was spoiled from last year), and also personally, as my mom has been sick. But we did win county Saturday, which I am happy about.

I waited to post numbers because the Super Quiz scores were wonky in our score reports. Overall totals got corrected this morning:

Stockdale: Subtotal: 43,158.4 SQ= 4,480 Grand Total: 47,638.4

Wasco: Subtotal: 40,546. SQ= 4,270 Grand Total: 44,816.

It would be AMAZING if Wasco made it as a wildcard - they're a tiny farming community who has never been to states before. We have our fingers crossed for them!

As far as individual scores go...meh. Nothing to write home about in comparison to what the LA and OC teams are putting up. (On the other hand, we may have five returners lined up for next year, and they're good kids, so that's a plus.) Also, the scores are all well-grouped, so that's nice.

H1: 8653
H2: 7816
H3: 7698

S1: 7613
S2: 6596
S3: 5850

V1: 6377
V2: 6101
V3: 5879

Actually typing these scores, I see how jaded I've become. Five years ago, I would have been dancing on the ceiling to see those numbers, and now I'm all nonplussed. I apologize for that! Best of luck to everyone.

I'll be looking for D2 this year, possibly D3, although I think we won't get there. Really, really hoping Wasco comes, too.

Good luck, all!

Rough years happen, and I'm really sorry this year hasn't been too great for you. Dealing with a parent's illness can be one of the most difficult things, and I'm sending positive thoughts to you and your family. I will say though that I think it is a really amazing thing though that you've gotten to the point where such a good score isn't something to throw corn at! It shows how far you've come, and you may say "jaded", but I say stronger. smile.gif I mean, if this is a down year, and you've got five returning...!

Also, go Wasco Union! I was amazed when I saw that!! I'm really crossing my fingers for them too. It'll be close. If the State cutoff raises the way that Texas's did, they're out of the picture, but I'm holding out hope. That's really amazing. Did your team sweep overall individuals or did Wasco get a couple of people in there?

Thanks for the positive thoughts about my mom smile.gif It actually worked out that this team wasn't my most driven - we do our speech/interview/essay on January 11th (yes, ridiculously early compared to our Round 2, which was Feb 3rd) and I was able to fly out to New York for almost a week to be with my mom right after subjectives were done. So that was a true blessing, and the team didn't take too much of a hit.

I am hoping that while the top 5 or 10 teams in California are going to throw up some astronomical scores, the rest of the state is not as high, which will give Wasco a chance to sneak in there as a D3. They had 3 of the top nine scorers at county, and we had the other 6 (two Varsities, one Scholastic, and all three Honors were from Stockdale). The kids who are (hopefully) returning for Stockdale are H2, H3, S3, and one more each from Honors and Scholastic (Varsity if his grades tank spring semester like they did fall semester (!)) who were alternates but who hung on at practices for almost the whole year and who are really cool. I'm hoping that over the next few weeks, those kids can focus on art history and econ, which won't necessarily do much for their scores at states (maybe a few more questions right in those topics), but will set the stage for next year.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing everyone up in Sacramento in a few weeks - best of luck to everyone!!

No scores yet, but according to Twitter, it appears Folsom HS won Sacramento County, bringing a surprising/shocking end to the 6 year streak of Bella Vista.

I have some Ventura County results but I think we had some issues with Super Quiz that resulted in really low SQ scores. Also the 10 event scores are likely just (Score+SQ) - SQ so they might not be totally accurate.

Edit: I have full corrected scores now. 10 event scores should be accurate as well.

1.) Calabasas - 45,566.5 (50,186.5)
2.) La Reina - 41,788.5 (46,268.5)
3.) Westlake - 40,977.8 (45,387.8)
4.) Oxnard - 40,625.4 (45,224.6)
5.) Oak Park - 37,855.5 (41,705.5)
6.) Oak Park B - 35,530.3 (39,380.3)
7.) Moorpark - 35,162.8 (39,082.9)

Along with Folsom High School, Bella Vista HS and Pleasant Grove HS have once again qualified for the State competition. No scores yet, though.

That's really good you had time to fly up to New York! I'm glad that worked out. smile.gif And yeah, I'm seeing scores across California a bit lower than I have been expecting, so it's certainly plausible that Wasco can sneak in. Keeping my fingers crossed for them!

Good finds! And congrats to American Canyon! I see St. Helena isn't competing anymore though? sad.gif So many great teams gone this year!

Apparently Folsom was 50,743 with SQ. Two of their Honors, Anish Adoni and Pardhu Konakanchi, hit 9k last year, so I'm super curious to see how they did this time around!

Edit to all of the above: someone just input Sacramento's team scores, and Pleasant Grove scored 43,498.5 with SQ, so Wasco's in for sure! biggrin.gif

MAZEL TOV TO WASCO!!

Got word that Wasco High School in (teeny, tiny) Wasco, California, just received a wild-card bid to states. We are THRILLED for them and excited to recognize their hard work.

I am literally crying as I type this. So happy for them!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Their score seemed pretty high so I'm wondering how many teams get in behind them? 44K last year was near the bottom of D2 and the top of D3. Anyone else in with a known lower score?

Thomas Sawano becomes the first ever Scholastic 9k in Los Angeles. As a three year decathlete whose always been at the top of the competition, that's really cool to see. This also the second year in a row where a non-honors has knocked an honors out of a top 3 overall slot (top 3 overall scorers in the region generally get a trophy)
