DemiDec Talk _ Academic Decathlon C&S _ California Regionals 2018

Posted by: TinDefacto Jan 28 2018, 06:10 AM

California's Regionals competitions conclude* this Saturday!! Let's talk about it. biggrin.gif

*Some regions (LAUSD, LA, Orange, and probably others) did subjectives today, and testing is on the third. Some awards ceremonies will be that day, but a lot of them will be up to two weeks later. California, you are strange. Shine on, you crazy beast.

I will try to do some predictions this week, but no promises -- I'll be spending most of the week frantically preparing for the Massachusetts competition! Good luck to everyone in your preparations this week!

Posted by: Alex Ballard Jan 28 2018, 07:00 PM

Here are my very brief predictions for CA:

ECR will have the highest overall score in LAUSD, CA, and the nation. They have an insanely strong and balanced team this year (one of the best ever), but I also would not be too quick to count GHC out of things!

I know more about OC, being that it is our county, but I think this year is going to be the closest in a long time. All of the top 4 teams (Woodbridge, Westminster, Valencia, and Trabuco Hills) have been close throughout this whole year, so it is genuinely a toss-up to see who is going to win it this year. Of course, I am hoping that we come out on top, but we are going against some perennial powerhouses!

At this time, I won't make any scores predictions because the level of test difficulty could sway some things. I might have a better idea of that after this Saturday.

Math and social science are done. Kids liked the math. Weird.

Posted by: The Evil Dr. Calculus Feb 3 2018, 08:54 PM

Yeah, math was very easy.

Posted by: The Evil Dr. Calculus Feb 3 2018, 10:21 PM

Piper and Luke both got perfect scores in AZ Region 3.

Unofficial Orange County SQ Scores:

1. Westminster - 72 (5040)
2. Trabuco Hills(!!) - 70 (4900)
3. Valencia - 68 (4760)
4. Woodbridge - 66 (4620)

There may be some other dark horse team that beat us, but these were the only ones I was tracking. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with our team’s performance, and I hope this is they year we break into that perennial top 3 in OC. Regardless, as SQ showed, this is going to be one of the closest battles in recent years for Orange County. Awards on Friday night!

Posted by: Jam11 Feb 4 2018, 03:03 AM

Unofficial Ventura County SQ Results:

1.) Calabasas - 69
2.) Oxnard - 68
3.) La Reina - 64
4.) Westlake - 63
5.) Oak Park B - 60
6.) Moorpark - 56
7.) Oak Park - 53

I wasn't tracking other teams but it didn't look like anyone else broke into this group. Also, I totally forgot that SQ now has math questions, so I believe the results are out of 84.

I didn't even know Corona had a team. That's a solid score.

I am not a fan of super quiz. 560 of our 680.5 point defeat was from super quiz. We haven't figured it out the last two years. I find it funny that a team we beat by 9000 points tied us in super quiz. We just aint no good (just like this sentence). Props to Maddy, Daniel, and Sumanjit for sweeping the Dean's Medals though.

Sooo many regions have to wait so long for results; we've got a lot more waiting to do still!

Holy frap. Congratulations to Elsinore; that's extremely impressive!! Do you know the top individuals from the competition?

Big shakeup this year. It's the end of an era now that West Valley isn't competing anymore. I see Hemet was there though, just not in the top five; did they not have a full team again, like in 2016?

And you won in objectives, too! Wow. That is excruciatingly close. That's extremely impressive though that your Honors managed to sweep the top three (and two over 9k!)! Thanks for the link. smile.gif Did the county change their policy and let you bring as many alternates on the main team as you wanted? How does that work for State rosters?

Monday - Sacramento & Ventura County
Thursday - LA County & San Bernardino
Friday - Orange County & LAUSD

San Diego is the last one on Wednesday, February 21st (I have no idea why it is so late, but I hope they release the divisions for State before this...)

Congrats to Stockdale! smile.gif Any individual scores from Kern? I'm curious about that amazing Honors of theirs...

The capital region has allowed teams to bring unlimited numbers to the regional competition for a number of years. A few of us in Fresno County have pushed to do this as well, and were finally able to get the votes to allow a modified version. We were allowed to bring 12. How we filled the 12 was up to us (of course we had to have at least, 2,2,2). In our case we had 5 Honors, 4 scholastics, and 2 varsity (once again I was unable to convince someone to be our 3rd). In the past we have been able to bring others (team II, III, etc), but they were not eligible for any awards which in my opinion took any sort of motivation out of wanting to spend a lot time studying. Under the new format all team members are eligible for awards. We were required to identify a super quiz team in advance (December). The plus to this system is that if the kid you think is going to be #5 ends up being second then that kid becomes a counter. We don't have to make cuts and be wrong. It helps schools who have a problem with kids not showing up. My wife coaches for such a school. She has had multiple scholastics not show up so they only have one counter, but she had three team II people there participating, but they couldn't be counted on the competitive team. Now you have some cushion. This year our two extra honors were sophomores who wouldn't have been chosen in a traditional three member system which would have probably meant they wouldn't have stayed since one does Robotics and the other plays club volleyball. Their two medals each will hopefully keep them hungry for more when the seniors graduate. Madeleine, though, is only a junior so we should be good with honors next year.

Hey, everyone! Sorry I've been so quiet. It's been a bit of a rough year, both with this team (it never quite gelled the way I'd hoped, and I was spoiled from last year), and also personally, as my mom has been sick. But we did win county Saturday, which I am happy about.

I waited to post numbers because the Super Quiz scores were wonky in our score reports. Overall totals got corrected this morning:

Stockdale: Subtotal: 43,158.4 SQ= 4,480 Grand Total: 47,638.4

Wasco: Subtotal: 40,546. SQ= 4,270 Grand Total: 44,816.

It would be AMAZING if Wasco made it as a wildcard - they're a tiny farming community who has never been to states before. We have our fingers crossed for them!

As far as individual scores go...meh. Nothing to write home about in comparison to what the LA and OC teams are putting up. (On the other hand, we may have five returners lined up for next year, and they're good kids, so that's a plus.) Also, the scores are all well-grouped, so that's nice.

H1: 8653
H2: 7816
H3: 7698

S1: 7613
S2: 6596
S3: 5850

V1: 6377
V2: 6101
V3: 5879

Actually typing these scores, I see how jaded I've become. Five years ago, I would have been dancing on the ceiling to see those numbers, and now I'm all nonplussed. I apologize for that! Best of luck to everyone.

I'll be looking for D2 this year, possibly D3, although I think we won't get there. Really, really hoping Wasco comes, too.

Good luck, all!

Rough years happen, and I'm really sorry this year hasn't been too great for you. Dealing with a parent's illness can be one of the most difficult things, and I'm sending positive thoughts to you and your family. I will say though that I think it is a really amazing thing though that you've gotten to the point where such a good score isn't something to throw corn at! It shows how far you've come, and you may say "jaded", but I say stronger. smile.gif I mean, if this is a down year, and you've got five returning...!

Also, go Wasco Union! I was amazed when I saw that!! I'm really crossing my fingers for them too. It'll be close. If the State cutoff raises the way that Texas's did, they're out of the picture, but I'm holding out hope. That's really amazing. Did your team sweep overall individuals or did Wasco get a couple of people in there?

Thanks for the positive thoughts about my mom smile.gif It actually worked out that this team wasn't my most driven - we do our speech/interview/essay on January 11th (yes, ridiculously early compared to our Round 2, which was Feb 3rd) and I was able to fly out to New York for almost a week to be with my mom right after subjectives were done. So that was a true blessing, and the team didn't take too much of a hit.

I am hoping that while the top 5 or 10 teams in California are going to throw up some astronomical scores, the rest of the state is not as high, which will give Wasco a chance to sneak in there as a D3. They had 3 of the top nine scorers at county, and we had the other 6 (two Varsities, one Scholastic, and all three Honors were from Stockdale). The kids who are (hopefully) returning for Stockdale are H2, H3, S3, and one more each from Honors and Scholastic (Varsity if his grades tank spring semester like they did fall semester (!)) who were alternates but who hung on at practices for almost the whole year and who are really cool. I'm hoping that over the next few weeks, those kids can focus on art history and econ, which won't necessarily do much for their scores at states (maybe a few more questions right in those topics), but will set the stage for next year.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing everyone up in Sacramento in a few weeks - best of luck to everyone!!

No scores yet, but according to Twitter, it appears Folsom HS won Sacramento County, bringing a surprising/shocking end to the 6 year streak of Bella Vista.

Posted by: Jam11 Feb 6 2018, 07:41 AM

I have some Ventura County results but I think we had some issues with Super Quiz that resulted in really low SQ scores. Also the 10 event scores are likely just (Score+SQ) - SQ so they might not be totally accurate.

Edit: I have full corrected scores now. 10 event scores should be accurate as well.

1.) Calabasas - 45,566.5 (50,186.5)
2.) La Reina - 41,788.5 (46,268.5)
3.) Westlake - 40,977.8 (45,387.8)
4.) Oxnard - 40,625.4 (45,224.6)
5.) Oak Park - 37,855.5 (41,705.5)
6.) Oak Park B - 35,530.3 (39,380.3)
7.) Moorpark - 35,162.8 (39,082.9)

Good finds! And congrats to American Canyon! I see St. Helena isn't competing anymore though? sad.gif So many great teams gone this year!

Apparently Folsom was https://www.fcusd.org/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=4&ModuleInstanceID=394&ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=94349&PageID=1. Two of their Honors, Anish Adoni and Pardhu Konakanchi, hit 9k last year, so I'm super curious to see how they did this time around!

Edit to all of the above: someone just input Sacramento's team scores, and Pleasant Grove scored 43,498.5 with SQ, so Wasco's in for sure! biggrin.gif

MAZEL TOV TO WASCO!!

Got word that Wasco High School in (teeny, tiny) Wasco, California, just received a wild-card bid to states. We are THRILLED for them and excited to recognize their hard work.

I am literally crying as I type this. So happy for them!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Their score seemed pretty high so I'm wondering how many teams get in behind them? 44K last year was near the bottom of D2 and the top of D3. Anyone else in with a known lower score?

Thomas Sawano becomes the first ever Scholastic 9k in Los Angeles. As a three year decathlete whose always been at the top of the competition, that's really cool to see. This also the second year in a row where a non-honors has knocked an honors out of a top 3 overall slot (top 3 overall scorers in the region generally get a trophy)

According to Twitter, Chaffey won San Bernardino County and Rancho Cucamonga got 2nd. Both teams broke 50k (but no exact scores yet). No word yet on if anyone else qualified from San Bernardino.

UPDATE: Redlands also qualified. So 3 total from SB.

Including San Bernardino now, there are 10 teams projected for Division I at CA State. With only LAUSD, OC, and San Diego left, I am wondering how many of these teams broke 50k...or, alternatively, will the the score cutoff for Division I be lower than last year?

Impressive performance by Rancho. They have some good breakfast spots and the TV show Workaholics is set there.

And Chaffey again being a strong/consistent presence in San Bernadino County. Coach Mercado is one of the best.

Go South Pas; that's amazing!! With their rate of improvement from Regionals to State, they could hit 53k or higher by State! (Beat Moorpark's score of 53,119.4 to be the highest-scoring non-LAUSD team!) Also, immense props to Mark Keppel for either hitting 50k or being very close; that is super cool. As is Rosemead's performance; they didn't even field a team two years ago!

Congrats also to Chaffey and Rancho Cucamonga for a new record team scores (at least of 11 events)!

As of right now, I estimate there are about 14 wildcards unaccounted for (assuming the top four Orange County teams all advance, which seems certain). Orange or Contra Costa could easily have a extra wildcard (if, say La Quinta or University in Orange, or Acalanes in Contra Costa, make it), but I'd say LAUSD will likely have 13 or 14 wildcard teams advancing. And looking at their R1 scores this year, it looks very likely that there will be many deserving teams. I'm curious to see if subs will be as high as usual under the new leadership.

I'd say the bottom of DI is looking to be about 49k (with SQ), with Cleveland Charter of LAUSD being the last one to make it. But I could be massively overprojecting them. If they don't make it, it'll be Lemoore Middle College. The DII/III cutoff looks to be about mid-45k, and I think either Edgewood or Oakdale will be the last ones in DII.

Orange County Results!

5 teams qualified for State (1 more than last year)!

All Team Scores Include SQ

1. Woodbridge - 51,320.3
2. Westminster - 50,095.6
3. Trabuco Hills - 48,563.0
4. Valencia - 48,286.3
5. University - 45,983.6

Honestly, Woodbridge pulled together a great team this year. Half of their team was not even in the program until November/December, so major props to their coaches for really turning things around! ALSO, University HS is a HUGE surprise. They weren't at Round 1 (so no scores from them), but I had heard rumors that they were fielding a good team this year. That turned out to be true, and they will go to the State competition for the first time EVER! As for us, while we scored lower than we had hoped to, I could not be prouder. For years, our goal has been to crack the perennial Top 3 in OC, and this year we finally did it. We also improved upon our score from last year by 4,000 points. Given our score, I am hoping we can squeeze into the top of Division II and do well there! So, I am very pleased with these results, especially the fact that we had our first 9k scorer ever (more on that below)! Overall, this was a record year for OC, with 4 people over 9k (the most ever).

Top Honors (A):

1. Hannah Hui (Woodbridge) - 9,151.7
2. Kaitlyn Vu (La Quinta) - 9,144.3

4. Edwin Santos (Trabuco Hills) - 9,033.2
5. Matthew Ho (Woodbridge) - 8,984.7
6. Saw Kyaw (Valencia) - 8,954.6
7. Cathy Duong (Garden Grove) - 8,793.9
8. Kyle Chen (University) - 8,656.2
9. Curtis Liu (Valencia) - 8,599.7
10. Karina Akers (Trabuco Hills) - 8,594.6

7. Sean Patel (Valencia) - 7,036.2
8. Tiffany Ho (Westminster) - 6,962.9
9. Kelly Zhang (Trabuco Hills) - 6,941.9
10. Grace Yoo (Valencia) - 6,616.8

Top Varsities ( C ):

LAUSD awards has started!! https://home.lausd.net/apps/events/2018/2/11/4502090/?REC_ID=4502090&id=0 mentions that LAUSD will be sending 14 teams in total to State -- that's insane. Hoping we get scores as quickly as we have in the past. popcorn.gif

Also -- we got full LA County team scores! (And top individuals!) You can check them out https://acadecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/Regionals/California/Los_Angeles_County/2018. Something interesting: both Palos Verdes Peninsula and Beverly Hills scored higher than Pleasant Grove, which was previously confirmed on Sacramento's website as moving on to State. However, LA County was told only the top 8, not 10, were advancing. Sacramento's site no longer lists Pleasant Grove as advancing. I'm thinking that was a mistake on SCOE's part, then, and that none of the three are advancing. :/
