Having all team top scorers come up for a medal. Cool. California has some flair to its presentation with things that makes it feel more important, brings more applause, and gives it an all-around better atmosphere. For example, the medal winners called up to stage for each event is scrolled across the screen with their school name. In texas, it's just a block of student names which makes it more like a scramble to get up, as well as no one knowing who to applaud for.

Oakdale and St. Helena each got 3 top overall students in D III. Valencia took 2nd and 3rd honors in DII. GHC swept the top scoring Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity students with Mark Aguila getting the top Scholastic score for the second year in a row.

Coaches Scholarship to each of the top scorers in each category overall I think? $180 gathered from all the Cali coaches. Another cool thing.

GHC Sabrina Carlos- 9,030.2
GHC Mark Aguila- 9,427
GHC Melissa Santos- 9,575.1

Team winners DIII
3rd- 40,324 Pleasant Grove

Rarity of an 8 girl, 1 boy team. Tends to be closer to the opposite. Good play from the dude and guy coach to don the fairy wings.

2nd- 40,526 Mater Dei (wow, super close)

Another small thing- Cali has a pro photographer doing these pics with awards. Feels like we could do that too since we have a guy doing team ones already.

1st- St. Helena 42,176

DII
3rd- 44,434 Valencia
2nd- 44,726 Edison

Edison rocking the track suits

1st- 44,945 Westminster

Scores staying steady from the last meet at this level- wonder if they may actually decrease at D1?

They tend to announce small and medium school e-nata before the overall top 10, since giving away the large school champ would take the drama out of it

Unreal. How the hell do they miss this sh!t? They screwed us (Franklin) over last year, and now they did it to University this year. Seriously not cool.

Haven't done exact math yet, but we lost 1000 points in interview from County. When the margin to first was only 219 that hurts. One counter dropped more than 300 in speech. Hmm. At any rate I'm really happy for the team that they were able to get up on the stage. Great job.

My quick analysis of the interview scores for all eleven of my teams shows a huge drop from regionals to State.

We had a similar drop, but considering how inflated most regional interviews are considering the level of competition, the drop isn't too crazy. 700s and 800s aren't terrible when someone medalling is in the low 900s and high 800s.

Subjectives drop at state. Stronger competition, higher expectations. I've learned to expect a 1000-2000 drop in subs, it's just the nature of the beast.

I'm surprised there's not more outrage at CAD. This is TWO YEARS IN A ROW they've made a colossal mistake, and it is unacceptable. We joked around that they delayed the start of the award ceremony by two hours to make sure there weren't any mistakes, and yet, University was the victim of egregious error that should've been easy to identify. Coach Canfield and the kids at University are wonderful people, and have represented CA to the best of their abilities for a long time. I feel terrible for them, they don't deserve this.

While CAD spends it's time dealing with lame minutiae like sweater pockets and length, its credibility is slipping, quickly. If CAD really is the pinnacle of state organizations, there is no wonder why Academic Decathlon as a whole is so dysfunctional.

...sweater pockets? I definitely think it's a case of two years in a row being a pattern not an exception and it is unfortunate and kinda crazy they made that mistake. I do think having a non-size based division skew makes it harder to pinpoint but still. To Texas' credit, I do not remember too many errors like that, or really errors in general, the three years I've been coaching. Last year's essay thing was frustrating but was somewhat corrected and it was a location problem not an error.

I do believe Cali has the best presentation of awards by a long mile. Texas is just not quite as polished and as someone who won a state title this year, getting the same plaque we got at regions was not super great. But this error from Cali is kinda crazy.

Uniforms were one of the big rule changes this year. While it was apparently in rulebook for years, CAD decided to begin to enforce its "no pocket" rule last year, which disallowed several team uniforms. Understanding that a good 1/3 of the teams wear cardigans or jackets that have pockets, there was a quite a hullabaloo. Pockets are now allowed. This year they were talking about erasers, and how they worry that kids might bring in erasers that have information written on them. I can only laugh that they worry so much about the integrity and security of their tests, when a fellow state organization is releasing SQ videos, and they can't get the award ceremony right. Worry about pockets and erasers another time!

I'll trade you the glitz of our award ceremony, for your scholarship money. Again, CAD has bizarre priorities.

In regard to plaques and trophies, I think it's laughable that CA D2 and D3 teams get trophies, where legit top-10 get plaques. There's no way a school that put a sub-42k score should receive anything similar to what top teams receive. It makes no sense. Give the also-rans plaques, and give the teams that really worked hard the credit they deserve.
