Want to clarify that Jessica He was #1 scholastic for Cesar Chavez (region II). Brian Diaz - also from Chavez - was #2. Jessica did not study with Conner to get her scores. She studied on her own and earned every point.

QUOTE (acadecker @ Feb 5 2012, 10:33 AM) *
For the first time in history, we had good subjectives. It took a huge weight off of my shoulders when the coaches were called in to look for any oddities in the subjective's, and I realized that we did well. Helena took the top speech trophy as well as scoring a perfect 1,000 for the third time in a row (district, Kingman, Regionals). Markaya nabbed a perfect 1,000 in Interview, and almost all of our speech, interview, and essay scores were fairly high. This is so unusual for our team, it defies description. We usually need to make up a 3,000 point deficit after Friday's events through testing on Saturday, and this year we did not have to do that.

I was doing the usual medal tally during the awards ceremony, trying to figure out how we were going to wind up, and I knew it was coming down to Boulder, Creek, Cesar Chavez, and South Mountain, but the total medals were very close, and there are just too many strange things that can happen at that point. Super Quiz Relay had been a mess, with low scoring from all schools, making the top schools bunch so tightly together that it did not help in pointing to who was going to wind up on top.

SQ Relay

Mountain Ridge - 26

Cesar Chavez - 24
South Mountain - 24
Sandra Day O'Connor - 24
University Tolleson - 24

Fairfax - 22
? - 22

We (South) have not been great on stage all year, yet I know our kids know the material. I think the nerves get to them on stage, because they knew this stuff. So, I was anxiously awaiting the combined scores, figuring that if we took that, it might put us over the top for the entire competition.

Combined SQ

South Mounatain
Cesar Chavez
Mountain Ridge

Then came the overall ten-event winners (or that was before the team super quiz awards, but anyway . . .)

I don't have exact scores. I was writing them down as fast as I could, but I had van/car issues at the end of the evening, and I don't even have what I wrote down (Anto does!). We also did not get all of the feedback I would like, and I am hoping to get at email of all of the .pdf files later from either Tom (our scorekeeper) or Jason.

Overall Ten Event Winners

Varsity:

Bronze - Markaya Hill, South Mountain, 5,771
Silver - Trace? Boulder Creek? (I think?)
Gold - Benjamin Web, South Mountain, 6,650

Scholastic:

Bronze - ?? Sandra Day O'Connor?? I don't remember
Silver - Jessica He, Cesar Chavez -- maybe was in 1st instead of 2nd
Gold - Brian Diaz, Cesar Chavez --they might be switched here, but I know the top two are from Chavez

Honors:

Bronze - Anto George, South Mountain, 6,581
Silver - Liliana Espinoza, Cesar Chavez
Gold - Connor Wade, South Mountain, 8,137

When they announced Markaya as the #3 Varsity, I felt we had a good chance to win, because I knew that Ben had outscored her. I was so happy for Ben as we bounded down the bleacher seats and ran over to get his medal for coming in #1 Varsity.

We got shut out in the Scholastic Division, but I figured that going in, knowing that Cesar Chavez had very good Varsities. Props to Brian Diaz, who spent a lot of time studying with me over the summer for Math and Music, and spent a lot of study time over at Connor's house, too!

Similar to Mountain Pointe's Honor's student, Anto had not been heard from a lot during the individual awards, but did pick up a Bronze medal in Art and a Silver in Super Quiz, so I wasn't certain how high his scores were until they announced him as the 3rd highest overall Honors student, and at that point, I thought we had a very good chance to win. Even when they announced Liliana from Chavez as the #2 Honors, I know that Connor had #1 locked up, so it was when they announced Anto that I started to feel a bit of relief from the stress.

Our team score was lower than I would have liked, as I was hoping to break 40,000. It did not help that I misplaced one of my scholastics, moving her up to #3 honors instead of keeping her in Scholastic--she outscored my #2 Scholastic, which had been my biggest fear going into competition, figuring that my misplacement of a scholastic could cost us a victory. Lucky for me, our score was high enough either way. The tests must have been more difficult, because I know we've been studying hard, and our overall score was similar to District. I saw how much Westwood's score went down, and they've been studying, too. So, props to EVERYONE, because these tests had to have been harder. It makes Stephen's accomplishments that much more impressive, almost breaking 9,000--way to go!

Connor's subjectives went a bit down, and I wasn't happy at all with one of his speech judge's scoring of his speech. It's a terrific speech, and the other two judges gave it perfect scores--the third judge's scores were . . . not as kind.

Hmmmm . . . Mountain Pointe, CDO, Red Mountain, Mountain View are tightly bunched, with Hamilton lurking close by . . . those are the teams that topped 40,000 as far as I can tell, with the top four very much in the mix and Hamilton in striking distance with the state's top student . . . that could be one very interesting awards ceremony at State! We're going to be content to let all of you knock each other out! We'll be getting a lot of experience in the process, and we'll be trying to keep up with Westwood, who I am certain will be working hard to come from behind in an attempt to sneak past the rest of you. My four top ten-event scorers will all be back for next year, so I'll be content to let them watch the carnage from a respectable distance.

As if things weren't already interesting, here are the objective totals from the top teams in the state:

29,425.7 Canyon del Oro
28,290.6 Mountain Pointe
27,555.7 Red Mountain
27,147.1 Mountain View
26,116.5 Hamilton

Needless to say, we'll be working on subjectives a bit.

Stephen B. scores 6310.7 on the written tests. Well done!

So, apparently, Jared from SJ is the top Varsity in the state right now? This is what I'm hearing?

I said I was not certain of the order in the Scholastics, and that it might have been Jessica He #1 instead of Brian . . . I honestly did not remember who was what, and I lost my notebook in the confusion of having my van keys in my briefcase which my wife took home with her . . . so I was stuck at Chavez that night with no van keys and no way to get to my car--which was locked behind a gate at South. So . . . I got a bit off in who place where.

Jessica kicked butt; and yes, she deserves every award and accolade she gets! Btw, what was her overall score? And Liliana's, and Brian's scores? They all did great, and they all deserve praise for working hard! See you at State!!

Pretty consistent with what I saw from Region 4 score lists.
We were pretty much second to either Mountain View or Red Mountain in every single category of objective scores(but not both). We just barely edged out in combined total score.

Updated. Not in the best format, but I couldn't get everything aligned when I tried to manually type in scores, so I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Just copied and pasted.

Honestly, those are some pretty respectable test tallies. But, that's surely where our points need to come from to keep that small lead.
