(Sorry about the two letter abbreviation thing. Sebastian started it, so I figured I might as well keep it going. I regret it.)

Wisconsin State is just one week away. Scores will be had. Tests will be taken. Not necessarily in that order. I'll be posting my predictions probably at the last minute because of midterms and the extremely hot weather we are having here. I don't know when I'll have results, as I'll only be able to attend SuperQuiz this year and won't be at the banquet.

Regional scores can be found here.

Predictions for Wisconsin State Competition on March 8-9. Lots of things could happen. Lots of things will happen, and there’s a .05% chance that nothing will happen, but here’s my best guess at what will happen. This version will be without SuperQuiz scores. I might try a version with SuperQuiz scores, but those are really hard to predict.

Overall Team Scores
1. Wilmot Union – State Champ to Nationals – 45,438.1
2. Watertown – Medium School Online Nats – Division I Champs – 43,020.9
3. Pewaukee – Division II Champs – 41,740.3
4. New Berlin Eisenhower – 39,302.7
5. Rufus King International – Division IV to Nationals – 39,279.9
6. New Richmond – 38,739.2
7. Sun Prairie – Large School Online Nats – 38,576.7
8. Slinger – 38,479.7
9. Waukesha West – 38,424.7
10. New Berlin West – Division III Champs – 36,825.4
11. Green Bay Preble – 35,976.6
12. Melrose-Mindoro – Small School Online Nats – Division IV Champs – 35,857
13. Marathon – 35,114.7
14. Green Bay East – 34,261.2
15. Green Bay Southwest – 33,526.0
16. Winneconne – 31,263.2
17. Seymour – 31,023.6
18. Dodgeland – 30,704.1
19. Durand – 30,678.6
20. Ladysmith – 29,784.8

Wilmot will dominate. 46k could be a possibility, but an increase to the mid-45k range is typical for their regional to state improvements.

Even though Pewaukee had a couple hundred on Watertown at Regionals, subjective scores from the Whitewater regional were low, and I think Watertown will have a significant increase in objective scores at state; however, Pewaukee is known for their impressive regional to state improvements, so this could be very close.

New Berlin Eisenhower and Rufus King will also be very close, but with NBE’s history of improving a lot in objectives, I think they’ll take the 4th place spot by less than 100 points. NBE had the highest subjective scores in the state at Regionals, so they might drop a little in those, bringing them very close to RKI (Wisconsin has some great abbreviations). RKI will also be the Division IV representative to nationals. If Wilmot Wins, the only schools in contention for that spot would be Rufus King, Sun Prairie, Melrose-Mindoro, Marathon, Dodgeland, and Ladysmith.

The next four teams (New Richmond, Sun Prairie, Slinger, and Waukesha West) will be very close in the 6th-9th place spots, and any permutation of these schools in these places is equally likely. I think NR has a slight advantage due to subjectives. SP had the 5th highest objective scores in the state at Regionals but had the lowest subjective scores in the state-advancing teams, so hopefully they improve in subs enough to jump to 7th, a great performance for their 20th consecutive state appearance. I know I predicted WW in 7th for last year, and they ended up in 3rd, but I think this will be the year they drop from the top 3 for the first time since 1997.

I have NBW in 10th with a high 36k, but they could easily jump up into the mid-38k range. With this being their second year at state since 2000, we don’t have much historical data on them, but they pulled off an incredible improvement last year, so anything is possible with this team. Green Bay Preble will take 11th.

The race for the Division IV title and the Small School ENats slot has been very close all season, with Mel-Min being about 600 ahead of Marathon at regionals. I think they will keep that lead.

Individual Predictions
Honors
1. Claire Vozel – Wilmot Union
2. Marcus Wolff – Wilmot Union
3. Levi Keen – Wilmot Union
Scholastic
1. Jacob Huebner – Rufus King International
2. Emily Willis – Pewaukee
3. Davis Lohr – Sun Prairie
Varsity
1. Emily Heckel – Wilmot Union
2. Tanis Rossow – Wilmot Union
3. Andre Quarino – Rufus King International

Call me crazy, but I think that Wilmot’s honors squad can pull off a sweep of the top honors spots. At regionals, none of them were in the top 3, and nothing motivates Wilmot like being behind. It will be very close. They will all be around 8.7k, and Eric Komas, Madlyn Singler, and Michela Suski will all be very close in the 8.5-8.7k range. Naveen Albert will also break 8k.
Jacob Huebner will take back the top scholastic spot after falling behind Emily Willis at Regionals. Davis will avenge his defeat at the Whitewater regional to take 3rd place and be the first Sun Prairie decathlete to place in the top three in their division since Jenny Anderson in 2009.
In the Wilmot tradition of improving a lot between each round, Emily Heckel will retain her spot on-top of the varsity pack and Tanis Rossow will jump to be the 2nd place varsity in the state. Andre Quarino will improve in subs from Regionals to take the third-place spot.

Additional Predictions
• Leigh Mills and John Stofflet take a selfie with the audience at Super Quiz
• At least 3 of Watertown’s cheering squad will be shirtless with blue body paint on
• The Sun Prairie alumni going to watch Super Quiz will only listen to Old Man River on the drive up

And there was a winner. Wilmot Union has captured their 5th consecutive state championship! It was a lot closer than I expected. Watertown was just about 500 points behind Wilmot.

1.) Wilmot Union
2.) Watertown
3.) Pewaukee
4.) NBE
5.) WW
6.) RKI (about 50 behind WW)
