Saw Riddick. Spoilers inbound.

Alright, so the movie itself was good. I mean, it was a riddick movie. It gave us riddick. Vin Deisel killed people in creative ways, and showed off quite a bit.

There was one side character, though, that pissed me the smurf off.

Katee Sackhoff's character. Oh my god. First off, the movie failed the bechdel test fairly miserably. The Riddick movies are all about male empowerment - not in a men's rights crap sort of way, but in a "making us identify with a walking mound of muscles and rage" way. So it failing the test isn't really a surprise, and isn't what I'm so pissed off about. Katee Sackhoff's character is introduced to us right off the bat as a lesbian. The rest of the movie centers around this. She does nothing but stand around, make snide remarks, get made fun of for being a lesbian, and almost get raped. She only gets marginally involved in the plot - and only with a sniper rifle. She wasn't good enough to face riddick up close like the men were. (And it's not like she was there for her skill - she misses a stationary target. She was the most useless "badass merc" trope I've ever seen.) She exists as comic relief, and her comic relief is in the form of "haha, look, it's a lesbian".

The worst part, though, came after she came face -to-face with riddick. For the first half of the movie, we watch her be the "badass lesbian" - then once Riddick shows up, she goes all gaga for him. Christ, I'm still pissed off about that. Riddick is so manly he can straighten lesbians out? What the smurf. Her character could be cut from the movie without affecting the plot, and the movie would be much, much better for it.

Overall, I liked the movie, don't get me wrong. But smurf am I pissed off about that stupid, unnecessary, utterly repulsive little side plot.

damn it, how could i forget to stay for that?

Dude, you missed a good couple minutes worth of Tony Stark-Bruce Banner banter. It was a fully-fledged scene. Not really anything in terms of giant revelations a la Thanos after avengers, but seriously funny, well-written, well-played character scene.

iron man 3 was fantastic. some of the best character exploration i've ever seen in a superhero movie.

Can you explain? I was really disappointed with the film. It couldn't keep a consistent tone, and the whole Avengers PTSD thing never amounted to anything. Also, he never showed any signs of mental weakness or fright during the NYC fight, why was he so troubled by it in this film?

Adrenaline helps with that. Same reason he didn't seem to react to pepper falling in the end of IM3. He had a job to do, and he did it.

Also can I just say the after-credits scene of IM3 was the best after-credits scene ever.

Should we send this, along with all articles about CDO (and possibly others about Willoughby),

The Cleveland Plain Dealer didn't cover Acadec, and the News-Herald glossed over USAD's smurfup. No help from this end of town in that regard, unfortunately.

I think I studied 80 hours total over my 4 years.

It's been a long time since you had an update on my weird-ass love life. So, um, I'm sorta dating my former manager. She's, like, 29. It's a good idea, right?

The Evil Dead was fun. Not a fantastic movie by any means, but fun. Not on the same level as the original though. Still, I don't regret seeing it.

I have a little bit of a man-crush on The Rock. Also, it gave me prime opportunity to be racist since I took latina girl and it was a movie about drug dealers.

While viewing Lincoln, the female who accompanied me was simultaneously amazed and aroused by my encyclopedic knowledge of the Civil War. Thanks to Acadec, I turn down pussy left and right!

(Note: no pussy was actually offered, but if it was, it would have been declined because I have standards. "Wait, are the Confederates the South?" is one question too far.)

The shortcoming of the rooney rule has been a fairly small pool of candidates to choose from. The only minority we know of publicly who was snubbed recently is Ray Horton, and his "snub" had a whole lot less to do with his race than it did with the fact that defensive head coaches aren't a sexy hire.

The problem is that coaching is something of a good ol' boys club. Between Mike Tomlin, Lovie Smith, and Tony Dungie, it's obvious that black head coaches are viable candidates. That's been proven by real-world events, for anyone too stuck to realize that their being black would have no effect on their coaching.

The issue is how to increase the talent pool within all ranks of coaching. The supposed hotpatch to the rooney rule is to extend it to coordinator positions as well. I personally don't think this goes far enough.

There should be a program to help ex-players transition to coaching. I'm not saying black ex-players, I'm saying all ex-players. The ethnic makeup of the NFL will naturally follow. But inserting players into mentoring roles with young teams or assistant position coach for wherever they used to play will gradually increase the talent pool as the former players adjust to their new role. Hell, make 1 year of coaching mandatory for every player who plays beyond their rookie contract.

This eases a second, unrelated problem: retired players have a hard time letting go (see: Chad Ochocinco after being cut by the Seahawks, Terrelle Owens's train wreck in that indoor league, Vince Young's half-heared but earnest attempt to join the cardinals this season).

In an unrelated note, deer antlers are the ray lewisest PED ever.

Rams just dodged a bullet... If they get someone who actually fits their personnel (*cough cough* Lovie Smith) and resign Steven Jackson, they're gonna make the playoffs next season no sweat.

you are clearly not familiar with the character.

Ohhh, I read a couple of those books back in seventh grade; I remember now. But I don't have time to watch the show! Weren't you the one who once chided me for spending less than 80 or so hours a week on AcDec?

That was just to try and get rid of you. Go study. tongue.gif

Serious question: in a theoretical game of red rover, who would you rather see on the other team, Vince wilfork or BJ raji?

I used to have a lord of the rings board game. That mothersmurfer had like 8 smurf game boards, some of which you had to flip over to get to another board on the back. We only played a full game of it once.

May of 2009 was a terrible month.

How did the crash even happen?

I had rickrolled zzzptm one too many times, and he banned me. At Nationals, he had a parent-teacher (admin-teacher?) conference with my mother, to get me straightened out so he doesn't have to shut down his computer to get my links to go away anymore. I was unbanned that night, and as I tried to log in for the first time in a month, the servers just said "smurf it, not this again" and gave out.
