So with another crash, and a lack of discussion here, I have wondered if their is a better way for us to create an online community for decathlon than a message board. I do not know what it is, but i think there are several possibilities- a facebook group, subreddit, slack or irc chat, etc. I don't think a message board is mobile-friendly, which is what most people use for their info gathering. Just an idea, because this seems to not be able to keep a community together anymore.

I like it, but then again I don't have any social media. It seems it has been more coach oriented the last couple of years. When I first started on the board there were decathletes all over the boards, but not so much until after they are done competing.

I think you really need to consider starting a new social media group, probably on Facebook. I have never had a student join this message board in six years of coaching but probably have had 20-or-so join the Facebook group for the World Scholar's Cup competition. What does this message board have in terms of users? Maybe under 500? The Facebook group for WSC has over 27,000 users and the majority of those are students.

Crashes definitely turn away users...

I've got Tapatalk running on my Networking-Forums.com and at komunumo.net. That's pretty good for making things mobile-friendly.

But for kids... it may be different... they don't even like using Facebook anymore, because it's for icky grownups. Instagram and Snapchat might even be on the way out... things are a lot more visual/video with the younger folks.

How about a Discord Chat, there can be separate "channels" (basically subchats) for like decathlon, coaching, and the different subjects. Just asking for what you guys think.

This is an awesome idea. Has a mobile app, provides the ability to create as many channels as we want, allows us to restrict access to certain channels if so desired, and even allows for the use of audio/video calls for anything we want to use it for

I know we can even add bots and mods on there if we want to too.

There is in fact an existing acadec discord - found it through reddit - though the demographic is more HS juniors/seniors (+ me). It definitely is more suited to ongoing conversations, though things tend to get dumped in "general" without much filtering for whether it's acadec/non-acadec related.

Make it the Demidec discord not the AcDec discord. tongue.gif

Discord sounds like another thing like Slack which is basically another thing like IRC.

IRC's not my thing for social stuff. I do enough with Slack for work.
