Shawnee Mission South emerged victorious from Kansas a few weeks ago and Martinsville just won Indiana. It looks like either large school runner-up Lowell or small school champion Reitz Memorial also qualified to also represent the Hoosiers at nationals: http://www.iasp.org/iace/DecathlonStateFinalsResults.html

So far, that's nothing new...

Texas state, Nebraska state, and Georgia state are all this weekend. Time flies! I bet Nebraska if not Georgia too will give us some surprises.

Does Indiana's score include Super Quiz?

About Alaska, I remember AK_WDB pointing out on here last year that West Valley and Lathrop have each won 1 of the past 2, 2 of the past 4, 3 of the past 6, 4 of the past 8, and 5 of the past 10 Alaska state competitions! I wonder who will win this year.

Indiana's score does NOT include the relay. They didn't count it this year.

It is true! West Valley: '13, '11, '08, '07, '05; Lathrop: '12, '10, '09, '06, '04.

A couple days ago the Alaska AD Facebook page posted a picture of the Fairbanks teams traveling by bus to Anchorage. In an attempted pleasant nod to both teams' strong history, I commented "I have little doubt a Fairbanks school will win." But a Lathrop girl who competed against me took offense and responded, "I would hope that winning isn't the point of participating."

Georgia AD State Results

(Note: SQ affected the results big time here)

1. Lakeview Fort-Oglethorpe HS - 39,418.6 (34,418.6+5,000 SQ) - State Champs/Division II Winners
2. Berkmar HS - 38,986.2 (35,586.2 +3,400 SQ) - Runners-Up (Wild Card Team)/Division I Winners
3. Parkview HS - 37,102.8 (34,702.8 + 2,400 SQ) - Division I Runners-Up
4. Mill Creek HS - 34,911.3 (30,511.3 + 3,400 SQ) - Division I 3rd Place
5. Chattahoochee County HS - 34,052.0 (30,452.0 + 3,600 SQ) - Division II Runners-Up/Small School Online
.
.
8.Pepperell HS - 30,392.7 (26,992.7 + 3,400 SQ) - Division II 3rd Place/Medium School Online

We had the highest two scorers in the competition (both honors) - Mati Nemera - 8,032.5 and Quang Tran 7,701.0. Mati's the 3rd 8,000 point scorer I've ever had but LFO cranked it up at the end in SuperQuiz. That performance is an argument to me why SQ needs to count. Going from 1,100 down to winning by 500 is huge. Congrats to LFO...we're just hoping to get to go to Hawaii (and pay for it as well).

If we go to Hawaii, Parkview will probably be the large school online representative. If not, we'll do it.

Pius X as a new victor is outstanding because they just started competing recently (I think 2011?) and Burke or Prep have won Nebraska every year since at least 2000. So they just broke a trend that was at least 15 years old! Go Pius X! http://demidecscores.gilslotd.com/wiki/State/Nebraska (Also, are they the first school not from the greater Omaha area to ever win Nebraska state??? It seems like it...)

Congratulations to Mount Michael for their upset in small schools as well. You go, Coach Dave! =D

The article doesn't mention the second team going to Nationals. Is it Prep or Mount Michael?

Thank you! I'm very proud of our students. This is our second year, and I believe that it is the fourth year for Pius. And I think you're right that they are the first non-Omaha team to win. Mount Michael finished second overall after Pius and could go to nationals, but I don't think it will financially be possible. Hawaii makes for very expensive flights and hotel rooms.

As before, I don't know if I should report scores for other schools, but ours was 41,943...nine events plus team super quiz score.

Congrats Coach! We're in the same predicament as you financially but we're going to try as hard as possible to go. I have seen what going to nationals can do for motivation and excitement in my program. I've felt energized and justified in coaching AD after meeting other like-minded coaches from around the country. Seeing these students learn and develop so much is the best part of AD, but if you earn your way to nationals (even as a wild card), it's a worthwhile reward for everyone in the program. Even if you can only take 6, I would do it.

Thanks, EDC! Congrats and aloha to the Minnesota champions! Come out of the cold and don your luaus and grass skirts!

Here's an old but extremely relevant post about going to Hawaii (bolded for emphasis).

QUOTE (Abuelo @ Jan 27 2012, 10:38 AM) *
I have been going to Nationals since Anchorage in 2001. Very cool place, by the way. Each year, there are State Championship teams that cannot find enough money to go. There was one exception to this; Honolulu 2007. Everyone found the money. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I have a feeling that "Help our kids get to Honolulu!" will bring much more cash flowing into the coffers than "Help our kids get to Omaha!" (no offense to my own hometown...)

Best of luck to all the teams fundraising. You can do it!

Alright, I've waited on this long enough: Why did CAD move the math test from first to last in the testing order? I've had my coordinator ask, but she was only given a cryptic response. Something's got to be up. Math has ALWAYS been first, which is good because it gets our worst subject out of the way. Now we get to agonize over it all day and take it after the always so "easy and literal" lit test. emot-iiam.gif

PA - no indication of second team yet

1) North Penn - 42K (Nationals)
2) Collegiate Academy - 40.2K (Medium E-Nats) - second team if qualified
3) McDowell - 40.1K (Large E-Nats)
4) Moniteau - 36K (Small E-Nats)
5) Souderton - 35.9K

I don't have breakdowns or whatnot... Erie Catholic Prep would do Medium E-Nats if Collegiate goes to nationals.
