children of men was so good. i'm retroactively mad at the 2006 oscars for pretty much ignoring it.

It went up against The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth, both films which are masturbated over by their fans to the exclusion of recognition of anything else.

I didn't actually like The Departed.

Also, why are there serious posts in here when we could be talking about ass and bacon?

I often lie awake in bed at night, wondering this to myself.

Saw Riddick. Spoilers inbound.

Alright, so the movie itself was good. I mean, it was a riddick movie. It gave us riddick. Vin Deisel killed people in creative ways, and showed off quite a bit.

There was one side character, though, that pissed me the smurf off.

Katee Sackhoff's character. Oh my god. First off, the movie failed the bechdel test fairly miserably. The Riddick movies are all about male empowerment - not in a men's rights crap sort of way, but in a "making us identify with a walking mound of muscles and rage" way. So it failing the test isn't really a surprise, and isn't what I'm so pissed off about. Katee Sackhoff's character is introduced to us right off the bat as a lesbian. The rest of the movie centers around this. She does nothing but stand around, make snide remarks, get made fun of for being a lesbian, and almost get raped. She only gets marginally involved in the plot - and only with a sniper rifle. She wasn't good enough to face riddick up close like the men were. (And it's not like she was there for her skill - she misses a stationary target. She was the most useless "badass merc" trope I've ever seen.) She exists as comic relief, and her comic relief is in the form of "haha, look, it's a lesbian".

The worst part, though, came after she came face -to-face with riddick. For the first half of the movie, we watch her be the "badass lesbian" - then once Riddick shows up, she goes all gaga for him. Christ, I'm still pissed off about that. Riddick is so manly he can straighten lesbians out? What the smurf. Her character could be cut from the movie without affecting the plot, and the movie would be much, much better for it.

Overall, I liked the movie, don't get me wrong. But smurf am I pissed off about that stupid, unnecessary, utterly repulsive little side plot.

DizzyIzzy completely misses the point of Riddick if he thinks Riddick can't straighten lesbians out.

Is Anchorman 2 worth seeing?

One of my friends said it was tough for him to decide, but the original Anchorman is better.

I'm surprised it wasn't an easy verdict. That makes me want to see the sequel! biggrin.gif

Mean Girls 2 was horrible, but it seems like Anchorman 2 did a better job.
