I just watched a movie review of Spiderman: Homecoming. Apparently this Peter Parker does AD! What a nice way to give us more exposure!

They announced at the Nationals banquet that USAD had been working with the studio to make him a Decathlete! How much did they talk about Decathlon? Do they give a good/accurate portrayal of what it's like?
It's mentioned in The Day After Tomorrow (the kid was travelling for an AcDec competition), though not much more than that. And of course, we can't forget about the "Scholastic Decathlon" in High School Musical. ![]() |

How can we forget the classic, "Billy Madison"?

So my sons and an AcDec teammate of theirs went to see Spiderman Homecoming today and reported back to me the interesting news that Peter Parker is apparently a member of his school's Academic Decathlon team and several references and scenes in the film revolve around AcDec competition. In fact, (spoiler alert), his school wins their state competition and makes it to the nationals in Washington DC! (trying to remember but isn't Spiderman from New York?) I'm guessing Peter Parker would be an honors level competitor, but I haven't seen the movie. Has anyone seen the movie yet and want to summarize the references to AcDec in the movie? Is this the top cinematic usage of Academic Decathlon since Billy Madison?

Just saw the movie. They did have USAD logos and were traveling to the national competition in DC. But the actual competition was two teams at opposing tables and buzzing in to answer. And it only looked like it was two teams competing. Still cool to see, but didn't seem too realistic with actual ACDEC competition

Mrrp, that's too bad it wasn't realistic. Ah well; still super cool to see.
Hmm, maybe I should go check it out for myself -- I still literally haven't seen a movie (in theaters or otherwise) since January... |

Yeah cool to see. And humorous seeing some of the attitudes of the decathletes. Definitely some relatable students.

Thanks for merging this thread for me (hadn't seen it earlier). Does the movie ever say how Peter Parker's school does at Nationals? It's probably one of New York's top teams in USAD history! (nothing against New York, but they must not have a lot of schools that compete in AcDec there and it looks like they haven't finished in the top ten at Nationals in 20+ years?)

His team buzzed in for the final question and got it right, and that question caused them to win nationals against one other team (the top team in the nation that was not named)

He didn't have time to compete--Peter Parker ditched the finals in the movie! Look for the part where his replacement in the competition is more concerned about saving the trophy than the people.

NYC doesn't have teams. As I recall, NY's entry was an upstate school. I'd find it more believable if it was a CA team. Spiderman has more of a West Coast attitude, anyway. -------------------- "The world could perish if people only worked on things that were easy to handle." -- Vladimir Savchenko

As I recall, NY's entry was an upstate school. In fact, this year, Lyndonville Central High School is in a tiny town with a population of 812. Spiderman has more of a West Coast attitude, anyway. Haven't seen any Spiderman film, but for some reason I find this dubious. ![]() |
