With another round of qualifiers coming our way starting tonight, I figured I would run down the standings and predictions

Europe

Qualifying: the top teams in each group auto qualify for the World Cup, with the top 8 second place teams playing off for the four remaining spots. Since one group (9) has only five teams, the record against the 6th-place teams in the other groups will be discounted.

Group 1

Denmark MP: 5 Rec: 4-1-0 PTS: 13
Hungary MP: 6 Rec: 4-1-1 PTS: 13
Portugal MP: 5 Rec: 1-3-1 PTS: 6
Sweden MP: 4 Rec: 1-3-0 PTS: 6
Albania MP: 7 Rec: 1-3-3 PTS: 6
Malta MP: 7 Rec: 0-1-6 PTS: 1

With half of their games remaining, Denmark looks like they can be the surprise auto qualifier out of this group if they get through their next three games with 6 or so points (three beastly games: at Sweden, v. Portugal, and v. Hungary) they should auto qualify. Hungary has all the tough teams left, so they could fall off easily. Portugal is going to struggle getting into a good second (only win so far is Malta which will be dq'd). My guess for second place right now would be Sweden, who have 6 games left including two against Malta and one against Albania in Sweden (if they don't get nine points from that it will be bad).

Games:
Sweden-Denmark
Albania-Portugal
Sweden-Malta

My prediction:
Denmark: 14
Hungary: 13
Sweden: 10
Portugal: 9
Albania: 6
Malta: 1

Group 2

(everyone's played 6)

Greece Rec: 4-1-1 Pts: 13
Switzerland Rec: 4-1-1 Pts: 13
Latvia Rec: 3-1-2 Pts: 10
Israel Rec: 2-3-1 Pts: 9
Luxembourg Rec: 1-1-4 Pts: 4
Moldova Rec: 0-1-5 Pts: 1

By far the weakest group in UEFA qualifying with the big three being Greece, Switzerland, and Israel (yea...bad). Greece has a decent sked left (at Switzerland, at Moldova, v. Latvia, v. Luxembourg), and the Switzerland match might determine who gets first place in the group (the Swiss still have to play Israel, and already finished with Luxembourg who they LOST to). The Swiss have the inside edge on a second place qualification into the final eight if Luxembourg gets passed by Moldova since they wouldn't count at that point. Latvia has the other three all to play, and could be in trouble if it doesn't escape with a home win over the Swiss. Israel could take 9 from the remaining games, with three home games (Latvia, Luxembourg, Moldova), and an away match against the Swiss.

Games:
NONE

Group 3

Northern Ireland MP: 7 Rec: 4-1-2 Pts: 13
Slovakia MP: 5 Rec: 4-0-1 Pts: 12
Poland MP: 6 Rec: 3-1-2 Pts: 10
Czech Republic MP: 6 Rec: 2-2-2 Pts: 8
Slovenia MP: 6 Rec: 2-2-2 Pts: 8
San Marino MP: 6 Rec: 0-0-6 Pts: 0

A solid group IMO without the star-studded names, a surprise to see Northern Ireland on top though (a game in hand albeit). Their remaining games are quite beastly however (at Poland, v. Slovakia, at Czech Rep), and taking 6 from those would be absolutely the best scenario. Slovakia would appear to be the true number one with a game in hand (including a date with San Marino), and seems like the rest of their schedule is just as unappealing as N. Ireland's, giving the Slovaks the upper hand. Poland has to play the other 4 good teams in the group, and if they can come away with 6 they would be happy; 8 would be gravy. Czech Rep. needs to make a move fast, and with three home games remaining they can still do it, but it will be an uphill battle. Slovenia is also in this battle but I can't see them progressing too far.

Games:
Slovakia-San Marino

My prediction:
Slovakia- 15
N. Ireland- 13
Poland-10
Czech Rep.-8
Slovenia-8
San Marino-0

TONIGHT ON ESPN!! Be there! USA v. Costa Rica (I will get to CONCACAF after Europe) will be one for the ages IMO.

Group 4

Germany MP: 6 Rec: 5-1-0 Points: 16
Russia MP: 5 Rec: 4-0-1 Points: 12
Finland MP: 4 Rec: 2-1-1 Points: 7
Wales MP: 6 Rec: 2-0-4 Points: 6
Azerbaijan MP: 4 Rec: 0-1-3 Points: 1
Liechtenstein MP: 5 Rec: 0-1-4 Points: 1

Finally, a group that's easy. Germany will go first, Russia will go into the final eight and probably win. Finland could shock if it gets within two with four to go, but I doubt it.
Games:
Finland-Liechtenstein
Azerbaijan-Wales
Finland-Russia

My Prediction
Germany-16
Finland-13
Russia-12
Wales-7
Liechtenstein-5
Azerbaijan-4

(All teams have played 6)

Spain Rec: 6-0-0 Pts: 18
Bosnia-Herzegovnia Rec: 4-0-2 Pts: 12
Turkey Rec: 2-2-2 Pts:8
Belgium Rec: 2-1-3 Pts: 7
Estonia Rec: 1-2-3 Pts: 5
Armenia Rec: 0-1-5 Pts: 1

This is by far on of the toughest groups, and Spain has left everyone in the dust. 18 points?!! Spain is absolutely unstoppable after Euro 2008. Bosnia-Herzegovina v. Turkey v. Belgium should be exciting though. Turkey closes in on B-H because they are done playing Spain. I think the fight for second will be extremely interesting. The decider could be in Bosnia between them and the Turks.

Group 6

England MP: 5 Rec: 5-0-0 Pts: 15
Croatia MP: 5 Rec: 3-1-1 Pts: 10
Ukraine MP: 4 Rec: 2-1-1 Pts: 7
Belarus MP: 4 Rec: 2-0-2 Pts: 6
Kazkhstan MP:5 Rec: 1-0-4 Pts:3
Andorra MP: 5 Rec: 0-0-5 Pts: 0

A surprising start after England's disappointment in 2008, getting max points from the first half sets them up nicely, with probably 7 points from the remaining five guaranteeing them a spot. The race for second is on, with Croatia, Ukraine, and surprising Belarus all sitting close. I REALLY like Ukraine right now after the domestic success of Shakhtar Donetsk's in the UEFA cup as well as Dynamo Kiev and Metalist Kharkiv both making it deep in UEFA (semifinals and round of 16, respectively). That momentum could carry over into qualifying.

Games:
Belarus-Andorra
Croatia-Ukraine
Kazakhstan-England
Ukraine-Kazakhstan
England-Andorra

My predictions
England-21
Croatia-13
Ukraine-10
Belarus-9
Kazakhstan-3
Andorra-0

Serbia MP: 5 Rec: 4-0-1 Pts: 12
France MP: 5 Rec: 3-1-1 Pts: 10
Lithuania MP: 6 Rec: 3-0-3 Pts: 9
Austria MP: 5 Rec: 2-1-2 Pts: 7
Romania MP: 5 Rec: 1-1-3 Pts: 4
Faroe Islands MP: 4 Rec: 0-1-3 Pts: 1

An interesting group mixture here. Romania has been a huge disappointment, and with Mutu hurt they are probably slated for elimination and looking forward to Brazil in 2014. No one has established a dominating presence, but Serbia has been very strong in qualifying. France seriously might not make it because Domenech is the dumbest coach in Europe, hands down. He scared away Trezeguet, who at the time was the second best option at striker behind Henry although Anelka and Benzema have become world-class as of late. It will be interesting to see what the French will do with Domenech.

Games:
Serbia-Austria
Lithuania-Romania
Faroe Islands-Serbia

My Predictions:
Serbia-18
Lithuania-12
France-10
Austria-7
Romania-4
Faroe Islands-1

Group 8

Italy MP: 6 Rec:4-2-0 Pts:14
Republic of Ireland MP: 6 Rec: 3-3-0 Pts:12
Bulgaria MP: 5 Rec: 1-4-0 Pts: 7
Cyprus MP: 5 Rec: 1-1-3 Pts:4
Montenegro MP: 5 Rec: 0-3-2 Pts: 3
Georgia MP: 7 Rec: 0-3-4 Pts:3

This group comes down to the fight for first between Italy and Ireland (go Ireland!). Italy has been struggling since their World Cup win, and fired their coach a year ago after Euro 2008. Ireland has been on the up, and can upset Italy and put them in the final eight instead of qualifying, although it will be tough. Cyprus is a team on the rise, and with domestic side Anothorsis losing out on final round Champions League by goal differential, Cyprus should challenge for third with Bulgaria and Dimitar Berbatov.

Games:
Cyprus-Montenegro
Bulgaria-Republic of Ireland

My Predictions:
Italy-14
Ireland-12
Bulgaria-10
Cyprus-7
Montenegro-3
Georgia-3

Netherlands MP: 5 Rec: 5-0-0 Pts: 15
Scotland MP: 5 Rec: 2-1-2 Pts: 7
Iceland MP: 5 Rec: 1-1-3 Pts: 4
Macedonia MP: 4 Rec: 1-0-3 Pts: 3
Norway MP: 3 Rec: 0-2-1 Pts: 2

The final and short group of the qualifying, Netherlands has this in the bag, and Scotland looks like they could be the worst number two team and be left on the outside looking in. All four teams are still vying for second, and Norway could leapfrog to 2nd if they get six points from the two matches they are down. All in all, a pretty weak group.

Games:
Macedonia-Norway
Iceland-Netherlands
Macedonia-Iceland
Netherlands-Norway

My Predictions:
Netherlands-21
Scotland-7
Macedonia-7
Iceland-3
Norway-3

CONCACAF Qualifying

U.S.A. MP: 3 Rec: 2-1-0 Pts: 7
Costa Rica MP: 3 Rec: 2-0-1 Pts: 6
Honduras MP: 3 Rec: 1-1-1 Pts: 4
Mexico MP: 3 Rec: 1-0-2 Pts: 3
El Salvador MP: 3 Rec: 0-2-1 Pts: 2
Trinidad and Tobago MP: 3 Rec: 0-2-1 Pts: 2

It is still early in this group (10 total games for each), and it is still wide open, with a win at the bottom potentially getting you to within two of first. U.S.A. is the class of this group right now; they are playing solid (not spectacular) ball under Bradley, and can solidify a spot with 4 points from the next two games against Costa Rica IN Costa Rica and Honduras in Chicago. Hejduk and Cherundulo are both hurt, which will mean a Spector sighting (GAWD I hope not Marvell Wynne) and probably Beasley on the back right again after he was solid in the last game. Mexico absolutely NEEDS to beat El Salvador in San Pedro to stay afloat, otherwise they might not even get the fourth spot to attempt to get into the World Cup.

Here are my predictions for the next batch of games:

Costa Rica 1-1 USA
Trinidad and Tobago 1-2 Costa Rica
El Salvador 0-0 Mexico
USA 2-0 Honduras
Honduras 2-1 El Salvador
Mexico 1-0 Trinidad and Tobago

at the end of this and halfway through, here's what it should look like:

USA 3-2-0 11
Costa Rica 3-1-1 10
Honduras 2-1-2 7
Mexico 2-1-2 7
El Salvador 0-3-2 3
Trinidad and Tobago 0-2-3 2

Try half field. Also, they're typically on football fields (does Chicago have a soccer-only facility yet)

I figured.

And a brutal start. Torres is playing awful defense, him and Mastroeni stabbed on that first goal and didn't track back on the second. Pathetic. They both need to come out.

So does the US have to get first in its pool to qualify, or can it get second into that second pool?

Sorry, the top three auto qualify, and then the fourth place team plays the fifth place team in COMNEBOL for a spot.
